The Registered Nurse is responsible for delivering nursing care to the Patient in the C.V. Laboratory. The R.N. administers medications, observes for complication and intervenes when emergencies occur. The R.N. will scrub to assist the Physician during all procedures (except PTCA) and will run the Code 300. This document defines major job responsibilities and performance expectations and serves as a tool for evaluation performance. However, it is not intended to be all inclusive as other duties may be assigned as necessary.
Demonstrates accurate utilization of the new CERNER platform (E.H.R.) as evidenced by less than 3 omissions of mandatory charting requirements within a 12 month period.
Regularly check email for corporate and department communications.
Displays knowledge and complies with the National Patient Safety Goals.
Implements an age-appropriate plan of care in conjunction with the health care team per Scope of Service.
Attends all UofL Health required educational programs as well as all Learn (KNOW) Modules
1. Demonstrates knowledge of drug therapy and documents according to best practice.a. Administers medications and IV fluids with 100% accuracy as demonstrated by a lack ofphysician, patient or peer complaint. b. Uses IV book to reference unfamiliar drugs before administering so that side effects andcomplications are prevented or reduced as demonstrated by a lack of physician, patient or peer complaint.c. Checks patency of IV site(s) so that drugs and fluids are successfully infused as demonstratedby a lack of physician, patient, or peer complaint.d. Completes nursing chart forms completely with accurate and pertinent information to recordpatients condition and progress as demonstrated by the appropriate documentation.e. Checks narcotics according to policy and documents wastage 100% of the time asdemonstrated by the narcotics records.
2. Supervises nursing care of the patient in the cardiovascular laboratory.a. Assists in the general preparation of the patient before procedure including assuring that thenursing data base is on the chart as demonstrated by the nursing data base and the lack ofphysician or peer complaint.b. Continually anticipates patients needs, observes and assesses patient closely for chest pain,E.K.G. changes and complications so that problems can be treated early as demonstrated by a lack of physician, peer, or patient complaints. c. Exercises good judgment in making decisions, notifying physician and in implementing patientcare as demonstrated by a lack of physician or peer complaint.d. Supervises nursing care of the patient post cardiovascular laboratory procedure.e. Supervises care of the patient post procedure including close observation of catheter entry site, assessment of vital signs, pulses, and post cath instructions to facilitate patientscompliance and healing of site as demonstrated by a lack of occurrence reports or physician, nursing unit, or peer complaints.f. Acts as a liaison with patients family, communicates with families during or after procedure as necessary and provides emotional support as demonstrated by a lack of family, patient,physician, or peer complaints. g. Provides nursing care of patient post catheterization/P.T.C.A. when hospital bed in notavailable; transports patient to hospital bed and gives report providing continuity of care asdemonstrated by the smooth work flow in the lab and the lack of patient, physician, nursingunit, or peer complaints.
3. Demonstrates knowledge of Cardiac Catheterization procedures and equipment.a. Scrubs to assist the Cardiologist during procedures as needed as demonstrated by a lack ofphysician or peer complaint.b. Operates the injector accurately, with speed and without assistance 100% of the time asdemonstrated by a lack of occurrence reports or physician or peer complaint.c. Operates the imaging equipment accurately and rapidly to assist the Cardiologist to visualizecardiac anatomy as demonstrated by a lack of physician or peer complaints. d. Is familiar with 90% of the different catheter wires and balloons used in procedures asdemonstrated by a lack of physician or peer complaints.e. Completes the log book accurately and completely 100% of the time as demonstrated by thecompleted log book and lack of physician or peer complaint
4. Contributes to the productivity and cost effectiveness of the department operation.a. Maintains stock supplies of medications, IV fluids and tubing and charges for items used inpatient care 95% of the time as demonstrated by appropriate stock levels and lack of lostcharges.b. Maintains professional demeanor during procedures so that patient care is the number oneconcern as demonstrated by a lack of physician, patient, or peer complaints.c. Performs duties in an organized and efficient work flow and a lack of physician or peercomplaints.d. Demonstrates flexibility in work schedule and duties so that the work is completed in a smooth and expeditious manner as demonstrated by a lack of physician or peer complaints.e. Responsible for participation in the mandatory call schedule. Completion of schedule, andscheduled cases prior to the end of the work-day as required by the Cardiovascular LaboratorySupervisor or his/her designee. Demonstrated by a smooth running call system and lack of physician or peer complaint.f. Performs other duties as assigned
5. Assists in delivering high quality health care services in a professional, compassionate, and courteous manner while respecting the dignity and individuality of each person who comes in contact with the organization by following the Standards of Performance.a. Maintains patient privacy and confidentiality at all times according to established procedures. b. Follows the Standard of Performance,c. Communicates effectively and courteously answering assigned telephone lines within threerings identifying self at all times.d. Assists visitors and patients in giving directions and information.e. Communicates effectively and courteously with all visitors, physicians, patients and employees.f. Introduces self and position to patient, families and visitors at all times. g. Assesses environment for safety hazards which could harm patients, visitors, or other hospitalemployees, and report hazards to appropriate supervisors.h. Collaborates with either departments and outside agencies to meet the identified needs of thepatients and the organization.i. Responsible for RT/RN/CVT student and JH new employee instruction as it relates to JH policies and procedures and Cath Lab orientation processes.
6. Demonstrates knowledge of Sheath removal and maintains hemostasis.
7. Other duties as assigned.
