The hospital has been recognized as one of the first health care facilities in the nation to receive a Blue Distinction® Center for bariatric surgery.The hospital partnered with sister facility, UofL Health – Peace Hospital to open a voluntary inpatient medical detox unit at Mary & Elizabeth Hospital to care for patients with substance use disorders. Most recently, Cancer & Blood Specialists, located adjacent to the Mary & Elizabeth Hospital campus, became the third location of UofL Health – Brown Cancer Center. At the center, patients will have continuity of care with trusted oncology and hematology providers, along with access to the multidisciplinary care, pioneering research and clinical trials of the Brown Cancer Center. In addition to the hospital, Mary & Elizabeth has three medical plazas on its campus to provide office space for a wide array of primary care and specialty physicians.

Responsibilities

Job Summary:

This position contributes to the efficient operation of the surgical suite. Responsible for having instruments and equipment on the sterile field in anticipation of the surgeon's needs for each patient. Works primarily with adult surgical patients.

A surgical technician is responible for assisting the operating room team during operative procedures in accordance with internal standards and procedures. Work includes arranging and inventorying sterile set-up for operations, passing items as needed to the operating team, assisting in the preparation and moving of patients, and in the clean-up of the operating room. An incumbent carries out assigned activities under direct supervision and direction of a qualified practitioner.

Primary Responsibilities:

Assembles instruments, sterile supplies, and equipment specific to surgical procedures.Scrubs for varied surgical procedures encompassing each surgical specialty and emergency procedures demonstrating versatility and competency while maintaining sterile technique and performing surgical counts.Institutes cleaning, reprocessing, and storage of instruments and equipment.Assists in transfer and positioning of patients as directed by surgeon or circulating nurse.

Qualifications

Education:• High School Diploma/ GED or equivalent (required)• Graduation from an accredited surgical technologist program (preferred)• Completion of a UofL Health Surgical Technologist training program (preferred).• Completion of hospital based surgical technologist training program. • Graduates of a military training program in surgical technology.

Experience: • Prior patient care experience (preferred)• Demonstrated competence in the surgical technician role (preferred)

Certification:• Basic Life Saving (BLS) accredited by the American Heart Association (AHA) (required)
