UPPER ARLINGTON SCHOOL DISTRICTJob DescriptionPosition: School Psychologist
Reports to: Chief Student Services Director/Designee
Employment Status: Regular/Full-time
LicensureFLSA Status: Exempt
Description: Responsible for the development and improvement of psychological services and programs; provide direct services to students and staff and consultations with counselors, principals, teachers, parents, and other members of staff who are directly or indirectly involved in the various psychological services
NOTE: The below lists are not ranked in order of importance
Qualifications
  • Master's degree in educational psychology or equivalent from a four-year college or university
  • Appropriate State of Ohio certifications/license
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Superintendent and/or Board of Education may find appropriate
Required Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
  • Ability to work effectively with others
  • Ability to communicate ideas and directives clearly and effectively both orally and in writing
  • Effective, active listening skills
  • Organizational and problem solving skills
  • Specialized skill in evaluation procedures for student academic/behavioral problems
  • Ability to operate various office equipment
  • Basic skills in counseling and consultation
  • Knowledge of educational psychology
  • Computer/word processing skills
Essential Functions
  • Accept and process referrals for any student in the district
  • Conduct intensive psycho-educational evaluations for students with suspected handicaps and perform re-evaluations as required using diagnostic instruments and techniques appropriate for the area of suspected handicap
  • Consult and counsel with staff and parents regarding non-handicapped students and conduct psychological evaluations as needed
  • Report and interpret psychological findings to appropriate groups and individuals during parent or teacher conferences, evaluation team meetings, and case conferences
  • Counsel individually and in groups with handicapped students and/or their parents in accordance with written counseling procedures
  • Maintain child study files, including written reports, recommendations, referral information, protocols, and observations
  • Participate in district-wide screenings such as early admissions and kindergarten screening
  • Work closely with special education staff as a resource and to assist with planning
  • Consult with teachers, parents, and other educational personnel on matters relating to the education and/or mental health of handicapped children to insure the provision of the most appropriate education program
  • May serve non-handicapped children after all handicapped or suspected handicapped children have received appropriate psychological services
  • Consult with district administrators and other staff regarding curricular program needs of individual or groups of students
  • Assist with planning, conducting, and evaluating in-service programs that are needed at district and building levels
  • Serve as a liaison person between the school and community mental health agencies and other community resources
  • Consult with mental health workers regarding students being considered for treatment or who have been in treatment outside of school
  • Utilize community mental health resources as consultants for mental health issues arising in the school setting
  • Make assessment results and other requested information available to the State Department of Education and related organizations
  • Assist in the development of educational evaluation and accountability procedures
  • Conduct or participate in evaluating and implementing or modifying instructional strategies, classroom management procedures, intervention strategies, and follow-up activities

  • Promote good public relations
  • Provide mental health activities for children within the scope of school-based practice
  • Serve as a role model for students
  • Respond to routine questions and requests in a timely, appropriate manner
  • Establish and maintain cooperative professional relationships
  • Assist in the selection of textbooks, equipment, and other educational materials
  • Participate in committees, study teams, and co-curricular activities as agreed upon
  • Participate in intervention assistance team meetings
  • Maintain and improve professional competence by attending professional seminars, workshops, etc. to keep current on relevant issues
  • Counsel, advise, encourage, and motivate students
  • Perform other duties as assigned

  • Frequently move around workspace and travel throughout school building;
  • Occasional requirement to lift, carry, push, and pull various supplies and equipment up to a maximum of 25 pounds
