Urban Land Institute is Hiring a Head of UrbanPlan Near Washington, DC

POSITION SUMMARY:

ULI is the oldest and largest network of cross-disciplinary real estate and land use experts in the world and a non-profit with an education and research mission. ULI’s mission is to Shape the future of the built environment for transformative impact in communities worldwide.

UrbanPlan is a realistic, engaging, and academically demanding curriculum administered through high schools and universities, and as well as for public officials and community leaders. At the high school level, the program helps participants learn about where and how land use decisions are made to make them better-educated citizens. At the university level, the goal is to create more sophisticated and effective land use professionals. UrbanPlan gives public officials and community leaders an opportunity to experience the risks and tradeoffs at play in public/private partnerships and neighborhood investment. UrbanPlan is currently active in over 30 ULI District Councils in the United States and Canada and in seven countries globally and relies heavily on local ULI members who volunteer to advise participants as part of the UrbanPlan process. UrbanPlan has reached over 70,000 high school and university students across North America since 2003. The curriculum was recently updated to include a stronger emphasis on sustainability and equity and ULI is committed to growing and strengthening the program.

ULI Is seeking an accomplished professional to direct the UrbanPlan program through its next evolution, bringing a passion for project-based learning, data-driven decision-making, and empowering the next generation of leaders in real estate and community development. The [Director / Senior Director] will direct the program in the ULI Americas region, collaborating with staff and member leaders to adapt and evolve program deliveries to meet current needs, stewarding the curriculum to ensure its ongoing relevance and impact, serving as an expert resource for internal and external parties, and managing day-to-day operations to achieve impact goals. The [Director / Senior Director] will report to the [Vice President, Education] and will supervise at least two direct reports based in Washington, D.C.

The position requires 20-30% travel, including non-domestic travel. The position is full-time, exempt, and is ideally located in Washington, D.C. The ability to work at least two days per week from the Washington, D.C., headquarters office is required. We will also consider remote applications. Occasional work on weekends and in the evenings will substitute for regular office hours.

The salary range for this position in Washington, D.C. is set at $120,900 to $128,350 annually. Actual salary will vary based on factors including experience, education, skills, and other job-related factors. Please note that salary ranges for this position may differ in other locations. The range listed is just one component of ULI’s total compensation package, which includes a full and competitive benefits package.

WHAT YOU’LL DO:

  • Strategy and Advocacy
    • Support the Vice President with strategic positioning of the program within and outside of ULI, working closely with ULI leadership in the ULI Americas region.
    • Foster among a wider range of stakeholders a passion for the civic and educational impact of UrbanPlan.
  • Curriculum
    • Develop and maintain a thorough understanding of UrbanPlan content and both share and inspire this learning in others.
    • Support the Vice President to partner with ULI leadership, District Councils, and members to innovate and test to ensure the ongoing relevance and impact of the UrbanPlan curriculum and delivery models.
    • Provide program structure and guidance to ensure that UrbanPlan deliveries are high quality and highly valued by participants, and that deliveries maintain the UrbanPlan trademark and support the ULI brand, while also enabling flexibility to ensure the program is relevant within a wide geography and at a range of learning levels.
  • Trainings and Deliveries
    • Deliver a regular schedule of training educators (high school teachers and university faculty), workshop instructors, staff, and volunteers, to ensure a substantive pipeline of human capital in support of program deliveries. Periodically evaluate and improve the training delivery models and content.
    • Identify and guide targeted opportunities to deliver UrbanPlan in situations where a District or National Council is not present or equipped to deliver the program.
  • Team Management and Operations
    • With the support of the Vice President, manage day-to-day operations of the headquarters team including business planning, budget development and monitoring, staff and contractor recruitment, staff performance and development, supply logistics, contracts, and invoicing.
    • Ensure efficient operations, technology resources, and delivery of materials to stakeholders.
    • Encourage and assist the many parties that deliver UrbanPlan to use shared tools and methods that will enable collective tracking of data and impact.
    • Ensure a relevant UrbanPlan presence at ULI's Fall and Spring Meetings.
  • Communications
    • Support the Vice President to focus on data-driven decision-making and storytelling to encourage participation and communicate impact.
    • Help recognize UrbanPlan volunteer contributions and elevate the role of the volunteer.

INTERNAL/EXTERNAL RELATIONSHIPS:

  • Develop strong partnerships with District Councils, which serve as the primary delivery partners for hosting UrbanPlan on the ground in their communities. Close coordination with district council headquarters team, other ULI headquarters staff, and district council staff.
  • Liaise with ULI’s Marketing and Communications team to guide development of resources that support donor engagement and District Council outreach and promote the program and its impact via multiple channels, including web, email, social media, and more.
  • Partner with the Vice President to advise, support, and collaborate with ULI regions outside of the Americas (Asia Pacific and Europe) on management and operations of the program.
  • Partner with the Vice President to support the ULI Foundation’s donor stewardship and philanthropic capital raising initiatives through regular donor communications and reporting.

EXPERIENCE:

  • The candidate should have at least 7-10 years' experience either in education or commercial real estate [the ideal is a combination of both]
    • Education – such as instruction, teaching, and/or pedagogy in social studies or a related field with experience in, or interest in, project-based learning. High school teaching experience a plus
    • And/or real estate development with a particular focus on land use economics or public-private partnerships.
    • Broad knowledge of, or interest in, additional land use issues is a plus. Knowledge areas might include public-private partnerships, urban planning, municipal government, market analysis, public utilities and transportation, sustainability, equity, and/or housing.
  • Experience with volunteer engagement, within a chapter-based organization, and/or collaborating with members to achieve shared goals, objectives, and vision.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Demonstrated success working in a matrix organization with a variety of centers and stakeholders, with community engagement or advocacy initiatives, and/or in a highly collaborative environment.
  • Demonstrated operational excellence. Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Proven project management skills and the ability to prioritize and manage several projects at once.
  • Skills or experience with setting goals and Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), surveying participant experience, tracking and analyzing data, and making data-driven decisions.
  • Strong interpersonal and relationship building skills, especially the ability to inspire
  • Strong public speaking and facilitation skills.
  • Strong commitment to advancing the ULI mission and creating opportunities for our members to provide leadership in their communities.
  • Bachelor’s degree.
