Urology San Antonio is Hiring a Chemotherapy Certified Pharmacy Technician PRN Near San Antonio, TX

JOB SUMMARY
The Infusion Pharmacy Technician provides pharmacy services, inventory management, and other pharmacy duties in accordance with state or federal Pharmacy laws. The Pharmacy Technician will safely and aseptically prepare chemotherapy and other medications for patients, manage the Nucleus system and maintain an organized record of all transactions occurring in the mixing room. In addition, the Pharmacy Technician performs limited pharmacy services and duties associated with stocking, preparing, labeling, dispensing, and delivering medications and prepackaged or unit dose medications under the close supervision of the Comprehensive Cancer Center Manager. Works closely with and assists the Front Desk as needed.
This position is also responsible for ensuring the accuracy of one's work and maintaining required competencies, certifications, registration, and other documentation. It is also responsible for various responsibilities that advance the mission of Urology San Antonio.
DUTIES AND ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
  • The technician will be responsible for all duties of preparing and dispensing medication.
  • Communicates with the clinic staff to appropriately time medication preparation and delivery.
  • Accurately prepares admixtures utilizing aseptic techniques compliant with USP 797 and USP 800.
  • Utilizes proper aseptic techniques and mixes chemotherapy and biologics only within the biological safety cabinet (BSC).
  • Follows clean room guidelines and accurately prepares IV solutions and other sterile products.
  • Maintains accuracy in processing orders to ensure that all orders are processed and dispensed in a timely manner.
  • Ensures that all orders have the correct patient information and proper physician authorization.
  • Interprets the appropriateness of a medication order before preparing the medication.
  • Evaluates critical patient information prior to beginning admixture according to policy and procedure.
  • Checks all orders for insurance approval before admixing.
  • Calculates cycle and day to ensure patient receiving on correct treatment day.
  • Mixes chemotherapy and other drug's dose volume accurately and selects appropriate diluents, as ordered by the physician, using appropriate aseptic technique and following policies and procedures. All chemotherapy orders must be verified with Registered Nurse.
  • Dispense medications following the organization's policies and procedures.
  • Places all medications in a transport bag for dispensing to the nursing staff.
  • Performs all daily and monthly Nucleus duties as outlined in the Nucleus policy and procedure manual.
  • Inventories all medications at the end of each workday via Nucleus and validates Emergency Medication lock remains intact.
  • Accurately documents patient information in the EMR.
  • Assists the nursing staff with stocking supplies, clinic organization, clean-up, etc.
  • Keeps the work area and equipment clean and neat.
  • Aseptically cleans the BSC at the beginning and end of each shift, and in the event of a drug spill, according to policy and procedure.
  • Wears proper personal protective equipment (PPE) according to the policy and procedure.
  • Properly disposes of all waste materials used when mixing chemo or non-chemo.
  • Follows all safety standards for handling chemotherapy and hazardous drugs.
  • Maintains current technician certification.
  • Attends a seminar annually on aseptic preparation of parenteral products and safe handling of cytotoxic drugs.
  • Follows all policies and procedures which impact position responsibilities.
  • Manages drug shortages and communicates to appropriate staff.
  • Adheres to infection-control policies and protocols to protect patients and employees.
  • Handles the front desk, including greeting patients, scheduling appointments, and obtaining insurance authorizations and referrals as needed.
GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Maintains and respects the privacy and dignity of patients: always assures patient confidentiality.
  • Adheres to all policies and procedures and follows all guidelines outlined in the employee handbook, including the dress code and attendance policy.
  • Follows Medicare, Medicaid, and other government laws and regulations of payers
  • Attends staff meetings, clinical meetings, and training in-services as scheduled and required.
  • Promotes teamwork and works effectively with others.
  • Displays a positive attitude and demonstrates the use of AIDET.
  • Conducts oneself professionally and shows compassion to patients and coworkers.
  • Reports in good faith to the Manager or Director any suspected violation of applicable laws and or regulations.
  • Understands and follows all HIPPA and compliance guidelines to ensure patient security
  • Performs other duties assigned by manager or provider while maintaining a helpful attitude.
  • Communicates with physicians, patients, and coworkers using strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Maintains appropriate knowledge about using PPE and chemotherapy spill kits during a cytotoxic spill.
QUALIFICATIONS
REQUIRED EDUCATION / LICENSES / CERTIFICATIONS
Qualifications Required:
  • Valid Certified Pharmacy Technician through the State of Texas
  • High School diploma or equivalent
Preferred:
  • Bilingual Chemotherapy admixture experience preferred.
