The Baggage Handling System (BHS) Manager is responsible for overseeing and optimizing all aspects of the airport's baggage handling system for the DeltaWorks team at Boston Logan International Airport. This role is equivalent to a JLL Facilities Manager and requires a thorough understanding of airport operations, specific knowledge of baggage handling systems (or conveyor systems), and exceptional leadership abilities.

The BHS Manager will collaborate closely with airport stakeholders, contractors, and team members to ensure the efficient and reliable functioning of the airport's baggage handling processes.

Key Responsibilities

BHS Management:

  • Oversee the daily operations of the baggage handling system, ensuring it operates efficiently and meets regulatory and industry standards.

  • Conduct regular inspections and proactive maintenance to identify and address system issues promptly.

  • Develop and implement operational improvement plans to optimize productivity, relevant contingency plans, maximize system uptime, and minimize operational impacts.

Stakeholder Engagement:

  • Collaborate with stakeholders including airport customer service and ground maintenance leadership, the airport authority, and other relevant stakeholders to understand their requirements and expectations for the baggage handling system.

  • Foster strong relationships with stakeholders to enhance communication, address concerns, and identify opportunities for collaboration and continuous improvement.

  • Coordinate and participate in regular meetings with stakeholders to discuss system performance, identify operational issues, and implement effective solutions.

Team Leadership:

  • Supervise a team of technicians, operations and BHS assistants responsible for operating and maintaining the baggage handling system.

  • Mentor and develop team members, ensuring they are adequately trained, equipped, and motivated to perform their duties effectively and safely.

  • Establish performance metrics, evaluate team performance, and provide constructive feedback to drive continuous improvement.

Budgeting and Cost Control:

  • Develop and manage the BHS budget, ensuring cost-effective utilization of resources.

  • Conduct regular financial analysis to identify potential cost-saving opportunities and implement appropriate strategies.

  • Collaborate with the finance team to accurately monitor and report on budget performance.

Compliance and Safety:

  • Ensure compliance with all relevant safety regulations and industry standards to maintain a secure and safe baggage handling system environment.

  • Evaluate and implement necessary measures to minimize the risk of injury to employees, passengers, and damage to baggage and equipment.

  • Stay updated on industry best practices, technological advancements, and industry trends related to baggage handling systems.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering or a relevant field is preferred

  • Several years of experience in managing baggage handling systems within an airport or conveyor systems in a similar complex operational environment

  • Strong technical knowledge of baggage handling systems (or conveyor systems), mechanical and electrical systems, conveyors, sorting systems, and associated equipment

  • Excellent leadership, interpersonal, and communication skills

  • Proven ability to work effectively with diverse teams and stakeholders

  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills

  • Sound knowledge of regulatory requirements and safety protocols

  • Proficient in using computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS) and other relevant software
