Duties

As a GS-0401-13 Biologist (Next Generation Sequencing), your duties may include, but are not limited to the following tasks:

  • Implementing and performing of clinical diagnostic molecular, genetic, and NGS testing in a Hematology Laboratory.
  • Performing genetic mutation studies for hematologic cancers and genetic disorders requiring the use of multiple molecular genetic technologies.
  • Conducting molecular testing of patient samples that includes processing specimens, DNA/RNA extraction, DNA/RNA library preparation, fragmentation, DNA/RNA sequencing, analysis of data including use of bioinformatic software for genetic variant curation, and interpretation of complex molecular test results.
  • Planning, developing, implementing, and managing conflicting clinical NGS testing, experiments, and protocols under study that may have major uncertainties and/or changing requirements.
  • Maintaining up-to-date knowledge in the field of molecular genetics, bioinformatics, NGS databases, and provides expertise regarding changes in the area of molecular genetics.
  • Developing, implementing, maintaining, and evaluating technical laboratory policies and procedures, quality control, and quality assurance programs for NGS testing.

  • The work requires prolonged periods of standing at laboratory benches and confined under biological hoods, as well as the movement and lifting of moderately heavy objects.
  • The work may involve regular exposure to chemicals, allergens, human specimens, and hazardous materials which require that the incumbent follow prescribed safety procedures and wear protective clothing.

Qualifications

BASIC REQUIREMENT:
In order to qualify for a Biologist, GS-0401 position, you must have completed the requirements for a bachelor's (or graduate) degree in a biological science, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to this position, from an accredited college or university.
OR
Have a combination of experience and education which includes courses comparable to a major in a biological science, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry or related disciplines appropriate to this position, AND appropriate experience or additional education which demonstrates similarly appropriate skills or abilities needed to perform the duties of this position.
ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENT:
You must demonstrate in your resume at least one (1) year of qualifying experience equivalent to at least the GS-12 level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector serving as a subject matter expert in Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) performing the following types of tasks: implementing and performing clinical diagnostic molecular, genetic, and NGS testing in a Hematology Laboratory; performing genetic mutation studies for hematologic cancers and genetic disorders; researching and developing new laboratory procedures, techniques, and diagnostic tests for a variety of hematologic cancers, genetic disorders, and sample types; or developing, implementing, and evaluating technical laboratory policies and procedures, quality control, and quality assurance programs for NGS.
You will receive credit for all experience material to the position, including experience gained in religious, civic, welfare, service, and organizational activities, regardless of whether you received pay.
