US Small Business Administration is Hiring an Economist Near Washington, DC

Duties

Duties are at the GS-14:

  • Analyzes business processes and economic impacts of new/revised/pending legislation, policies and procedures and clearly articulates interpretation of economic information.
  • Consults and coordinates with data-collecting agencies regarding update, clarification, access, coverage and usefulness of data sources.
  • Prepares narrative research reports which describe and assess the adequacy of methodology and data employed and discuss policy and regulatory implications.
  • Serves as economic consultant and advisor to senior SBA officials in matters related to current state of the economy, industrial structure and related economic phenomena and their impacts on competitive position of small businesses in the U.S. and provides recommendations for possible policy actions.

Qualifications

To qualify at the
GS-13: One year of specialized experience, equivalent to the GS-12 grade level in the Federal service, obtained in either the private or public sector: developing and conducting regulatory impact and economic analyses through the management, synthesis, and analysis of large datasets. These qualifications must be clearly references in your resume.
To qualify at the:
GS-14: One year of specialized experience, equivalent to the GS-13 grade level in the Federal Service, obtained in either the private or public sector: drafting Federal regulations and developing and overseeing regulatory impact and economic analyses through the management, synthesis, and analysis of large datasets. These qualifications must be clearly referenced in your resume.

  • A full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in economics that included at least 21 semester hours (31.5 quarter hours) in economics and 3 semester hours (4.5 quarter hours) in statistics, accounting, or calculus.
OR
Combination of education and experience: education must include courses equivalent to a major in economics, as previously described, plus appropriate experience or additional education. To be qualifying your experience may have included the following or must be sufficient to demonstrate the ability to perform the following:
  • Individual economic research assignments requiring planning, information assembly, analysis and evaluation, conclusions and report preparation; and
  • Supervisory or project coordination assignments involving a staff of professional economists and requiring the evaluation and interpretation of economic information. OR
  • Teaching assignments in a college or university that included both class instruction in economics subjects and one of the following; (1) personal research that produced evidence of results; (2) direction of graduate theses in economics; or (3) service as a consultant or advisor on technical economics problems.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g. Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g. professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
