Duties
  • Provides independent guidance on the implementation, development and management of industrial hygiene, occupational safety and health, fire protection, life safety, accessibility requirements, environmental compliance and public health programs.
  • Serves as an expert on industrial hygiene occupational safety and health, fire protection, life safety, accessibility requirements, environmental compliance and public health programs.
  • Advises other subject matter experts and key members of management within the agency of the findings.
  • Takes corrective actions to develop and implement measures to eliminate, mitigate or control safety and health hazards.
  • Independently organizes and administers industrial hygiene and occupational safety training and education activities both formal and informal.

This position IS NOT in the bargaining unit.
This position IS considered "essential" for purposes of reporting to work when the facility might otherwise be closed.
Residency Requirement: There is a residency requirement for all applicants not currently employed by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. This residency requirement states that candidates must have, for three of the last five years immediately prior to applying for this position; (1) resided in the United States; OR (2) worked for the United States Government as an employee overseas in a Federal or Military capacity, OR (3) been a dependent of a U.S. Federal or Military employee serving overseas.
Probationary Period: You may be required to serve a probationary period of 1 year.
QualificationsThe qualifications for this position must be met by 11:59 PM (Eastern Time) on 09/18/2024.Current Federal employees must have served 52 weeks at the lower grade or equivalent grade band in the Federal service. The Time-in-Grade requirement must be met by 11:59 PM (Eastern Time) on 09/18/2024.
Basic Requirements: All applicants must meet the following basic requirements: (Must be supported in Transcripts from an accredited institution, Resume and/or Applicable Certificate)
  • A bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree in industrial hygiene, occupational health sciences, occupational and environmental health, toxicology, safety sciences, or related science; or
  • A bachelor's degree in a branch of engineering, physical science, or life science that included 12 semester hours in chemistry, including organic chemistry, and 18 additional semester hours of courses in any combination of chemistry, physics, engineering, health physics, environmental health, biostatistics, biology, physiology, toxicology, epidemiology, or industrial hygiene; or
  • Certification from the American Board of Industrial Hygiene(external link) (ABIH).
  • Courses in the history or teaching of chemistry are not acceptable.
GS-13: You qualify at the GS-13 level if you possess one (1) year of specialized experience, which is equivalent to at least the GS-12 level in the federal government, that equipped you with the skills needed to successfully perform the duties of the position. You must have experience performing the following duties:
  • Developing occupational safety and environmental health programs for a large organization;
  • Taking corrective actions and implementing measures to eliminate, mitigate or control safety and health hazards for a large organization;
  • Perform mission critical safety and health investigations;
  • Implementing comprehensive occupational safety inspections and industrial hygiene monitoring programs for annual occupational safety and health inspections;
  • Conducts formal and informal industrial hygiene and occupational safety training and education.
