  • The incumbent works under the supervision of the Chief Technologist and Service Chief, and is expected to carry out his/her non-clinical duties with considerable independence.
  • The incumbent is responsible for the efficiency and quality of radiologic technical services, for maintenance of the records required, and for the preparation of reports on technical operations.
  • Reviews studies for technical quality, resolves technical problems and takes appropriate corrective action.
  • Writes and reviews methods and instructions in the Policy/Procedure Manual.
  • Has technical over sight for Quality Assurance and Quality Control for the CT service
  • Makes work assignments in the CT service based on workload, urgency of need, availability of equipment, and level of staff training.
  • Is qualified to perform a full range of CT and diagnostic radiologic procedures, when required by personnel shortages or workload backup.
  • Teaches and trains new personnel in CT technology, and plans and implements staff In-Service Training programs.
  • Plans requests for Personnel Action, writes functional statements and performance plans, interviews applicants, approves leave, counsels staff on performance evaluation and grievances, and initiates disciplinary action
  • Continuously observe the process, identify problems, formulate solutions, obtain approval from management, institute and monitor solutions.
  • Performs CT imaging of heads and bodies which include head, face, larynx, neck, orbits, paranasal sinus, parotid glands, chest, cervical spine, thoracic spine, lumbo-sacral spine, brachial plexus, abdomen, pelvis, and extremities. Complex procedures including CTA chest, abdomen, pelvis, aorta, pulmonary embolism, carotid bifurcations, circle of willis, virtual colonoscopies, liver, renal, runoffs, prostate, cardiac, CT procedures, biopsies, and CT research exams.
  • Incumbent screens patients prior to the exam to determine if there are any contraindications to the CT procedure. Allays
  • Perform clinical analysis of data recorded by the computer. Performs image capture, retrieval, and archiving functions. Maintains archives on media format as directed.
  • Technologist sends studies to a long-term storage Picture Archiving Communication System (PACS). Verifies patient study is in PACS. Case edits exam in Vista in a timely manner for Radiologist dictation. Perform technical operation and general technical maintenance of the computer, disk drives, console, imaging devices, etc.
Work Schedule: 8:00am - 4:30pm, Monday- Friday
This Position supports 24/7 operations throughout the calendar year. Work is typically performed on the day shift; however, candidate may be subject to overtime work, shift work, and/or work on rotating shifts to include evenings, weekends, and holidays. Subject to call back outside tour of duty.

QualificationsBasic Requirements:
  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Certification. All applicants must be certified in general radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology, Radiography (ARRT) (R). Advanced ARRT certification is required for assignments that include computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), [or Mammography (M) duties performed independently, as applicable].
  • Education. Completion of a full-time training course of at least 24 months in duration (or the equivalent) in a post-high school diagnostic radiologic technology program, evidenced by a certificate or an associate degree, accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) or from [other accrediting agencies as recognized by the Department of Education (DOE).]
  • English Language Proficiency. DRTs must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), and 7407(d).
Grade Determinations: At least one year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level of GS-9, directly related to the position being filled that demonstrates the clinical competencies described at that level.
Knowledge Skills And Abilities Candidate Must Demonstrate
  • Ability to balance the needs of patients and staff while still performing complex scans and procedures.
  • Knowledge of techniques for gathering relevant information from the medical record, significant others, and health care providers.
  • Ability to assess factors that may contraindicate the procedure.
  • Knowledge of basic first aid and basic life support practices related to radiography.
  • Knowledge of pre-procedural, procedural, and post-procedural care of patients
  • Ability to analyze organizational, technical, and administrative problems and to develop and implement solutions that result in efficient section operation.
  • Ability to evaluate quality management procedures and processes
  • Ability to analyze and use data effectively to manage workload, quality, performance, and productivity.
  • Skill in developing new policies and guidelines as needed.
  • Skill in problem solving and conflict resolution.
Preferred Experience: Advanced certification in CT, at least 3 years experience in CT imaging.
