GS-05: Applicants must have 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-4 grade level; OR a bachelor's degree or 4 years of successfully completed education above high school leading to a bachelor's degree with 24 semester hours of related course work; OR appropriate combinations of successfully completed post-high school education and specialized experience.
Qualifying coursework includes natural resource management, natural sciences, earth sciences, history, archeology, anthropology, park and recreation management, law enforcement/police science, social sciences, museum sciences, business administration, public administration, behavioral sciences, sociology, or other closely related subjects pertinent to the management and protection of natural and cultural resources.
Examples of specialized experience include: Answering visitor inquiries, providing information on rules, regulations, and program activities, conducting interpretive talks, conservation education programs, and facility tours. Checking the usage and condition of public use areas, boat ramps, group camps, and other recreation areas for safety, fire, sanitation and maintenance reasons and maintaining the supply of educational materials and items for distribution.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
