Clinical Social Work Fellow

The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, in collaboration with Dallas Children’s Medical Center, is proud to announce the inaugural Post Graduate Clinical Social Work Program funded by the Texas Child Mental Health Care Consortium (TCMHCC) intended to improve children and family mental health services. The ideal candidate is seeking an enriched, dynamic, training program. You will work alongside some of the top mental health providers, researchers, and academics in the State of Texas, and have the opportunity to gain exposure and direct practice to an assortment of psychiatric multidisciplinary programs. You are creative, flexible, a self-starter who would like to work with the some of the best and brightest in the field. Upon completion of this program as a UT Southwestern Fellow, you will be able to work with an acute, complex, caseload working within a diverse patient population.

Shift: 8-hour flex shift, Monday through Friday. Additional details will be discussed as part of the interview process

This is a competitive paid, full time, in-person, two-year fellowship for LMSWs seeking their clinical license requirements with a focus on children and family behavioral health:

• Individual, family, and group psychotherapy direct practice, supervision, observation, and training in pediatric psychiatry and behavioral health settings 
• Paid LCSW-S supervision, training, and didactic education specific for LCSWs 
• Multidisciplinary experience in psychiatric inpatient and outpatient settings 
• Specialized psychiatric rotations (behavioral, developmental, substance use, and more) 

EXPERIENCE | EDUCATION: 

REQUIRED:

• Active and in good standing LMSW in state of residence (preference will be given to Texas residents) from CSWE-accredited graduate school 
• Proof of U.S. Citizenship or U.S. Permanent Residence 
• Commitment to a two-year paid full-time residency (in-person) 
• Graduate GPA (3.0 ) 
• Statement of Purpose 

PREFERRED: 

• The preferred candidate would possess the following qualifications/skills:
• 1-2 years of experience in child and family mental health services
• 1-2 years of experience in pediatric inpatient and outpatient mental health settings 
• Knowledge of child and family mental health community resources 
• Desire to learn and welcome training, structured feedback, and supervisory direction 
• Ability to work collaboratively with an interdisciplinary team 
• Excellent verbal, written, and client interaction skills 
• Proficiency in electronic health records and technology 
• Strong organizational and time management skills 
• Ability to thrive and remain flexible in fast pace, changing environment 

JOB DUTIES:

• Uphold NASW Code of Ethics and NASW Core Competencies of Practice
• Uphold federal, state, local, and institutional regulations, policies, and procedures 
• Performs psycho-social assessment, psychotherapeutic intervention, and treatment for individuals, groups, and family systems under the supervision of the BHEC-clinical supervisor and clinical site directors 
• Effectively communicate and collaborate with patients and family members regarding the diagnosis, treatment, and outcome plans.
• Attend and actively participate in weekly didactic training and supervision sessions 
• Provide written evaluation and feedback relative to clinical learning goals and outcomes 
• Performs social work assessment and crisis intervention for patients and family members presenting to clinical fellowship rotation sites 
• Anticipates patient’s and/or patient’s family needs and expectations and uses these with assessment to help develop appropriate care plans for the patient. 
• In collaboration with the clinical supervisor, preceptor, and/or clinical team on-call, identifies psychiatric emergencies. Assesses the potential for self-harm/suicidal ideation and coordinates voluntary and involuntary treatment/commitment procedures. 
• Works collaboratively with psychiatric multidisciplinary team, stakeholders, and assigned supervisors to develop psychodynamic interventions and treatment for children, adolescents, emergent youth and family systems 
• Assists clinical staff in evaluation and stabilization of patients, as needed 
• Facilitates admission and transfer processes to appropriate facilities, as indicated. 
• Identifies psychosocial-emotional risk factors that may increase barriers to mental health treatment, including but not limited to the following risk factors such as suspected abuse, neglect, trauma, interpersonal violence, behavioral health concerns, houselessness, food insecurity, and limited resources, etc. 
• Provides psycho-education to patient’s and/or patient’s families.
• Demonstrates effective communication with diverse populations
• Refers patients to community programs and resources as indicated to assist the patient in meeting their mental health care needs 
• Maintains timely documentation; consistently meets departmental standards Serves as patient and/or family advocate.
• Responds to patient’s and/or patient’s family’s complaints and reports them to supervisor. Utilizes chain of command to resolve patient, operational, or personal work-related problems. Maintains HIPPA compliance and privacy of all patients. Accesses only medical records for patients that are assigned Acts as a resource for the department for complicated mental health processes as related to Order of Protective Custody (OPC) and Apprehension by Police Officer without Warrant (APOWW). Performs other duties as assigned. 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES 

• Good general health and stress coping ability to engage in fast-paced environments 
• Full mobility and ability to participate in vigorous activity. Ability to communicate to allow discussions with physicians, patients and other members of the healthcare team. 
• Possess near vision for accurate reading of computer screens and recording on patient charts. 
• Must be able to walk reasonable distances to cover multiple nursing units. 
• Proficient computer skills and knowledge; able to meet EHR clinical documentation and department communication standards. 

WORKING CONDITIONS: 

Work is performed primarily in a hospital and outpatient clinic environment. Walking, standing, bending, turning and stooping.
