Cell Biology

This position is available within the Department of Cell Biology at the Electron Microscopy Core Facility (EMCF). The EMCF offers transmission and scanning electron microscopy services, along with additional offerings such as correlative light and electron microscopy (CLEM), and immunogold labeling. The candidate will work closely with the Director, group members, and will play an important role in CLEM projects and Focused Ion Beam Scanning Electron Microscopy (FIB-SEM) technology for large volume imaging of biological samples.

Job Summary

The successful candidate should hold a PhD or M.Sc. degree and have strong training in biological sciences or related field. It is also critical that the candidate has a history of working with electron microscopes. It is essential that the candidate possesses a deep understanding and experience in biological science electron microscopy and sample preparation. Experience in CLEM and/or volume electron microscopy is desirable. The ideal candidate should be technologically adept, a team player with strong interpersonal and communication skills, as well as being well-organized, structured, and capable of planning and executing tasks effectively.

Preferred Skills and Education

  • Ph.D. or M.Sc. degree in Biological Sciences or related field, with 9 or more years of relevant experience in a multi-user electron microscopy-based facility or research laboratory.
  • Proficiency in operating scanning and transmission electron microscopes, along with experience in biological science electron microscopy.
  • Ability to support and engage with a diverse user base with varying levels of microscopy experience and skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, capable of interacting with individuals at all levels including undergraduate students, graduate students, post-docs, staff, faculty, and industry customers.
  • Willingness to learn and adapt to new techniques and technologies.
  • Team-oriented work ethic.

Experience and Education

  • Ph.D. degree with major coursework in field of assignment and six (6) years research experience in field of assignment, including at least one (1) year at level of Research Scientist or equivalent.
  • Master's degree with major coursework in field of assignment and nine (9) years research experience in field of assignment, including at least two (2) years at level of Research Scientist or equivalent.
  • May consider a Bachelor's degree with major coursework in field of assignment with additional related experience.

Lab Duties

  • Collaborate with EMCF staff in day-to-day operations.
  • Provide support to users for experimental design, sectioning, staining, and image acquisition.
  • Perform sectioning and operate electron microscopes.
  • Implement and adjust EM applications and workflows.
  • Oversee user operations to ensure safe and effective instrument usage, and adherence to best-practice microscopy techniques.

Job Duties

  • Plans, organizes, coordinates, directs and personally participates in major medical or scientific research projects, including development and implementation of research protocols.
  • Selects key research personnel; determines specific goals or objectives to be attained; assigns and reviews work of subordinates.
  • Reviews and analyzes resulting research data, revises techniques or approaches to work problems as indicated as necessary by research data.
  • Compiles, writes and submits project results to principal investigator or department chairman.
  • Prepares or assists in preparation of research papers, reports and abstracts for publication as one of co-authors.
  • Designs, develops or adapts equipment used in experiments or research to obtain desired results.
  • Plans and supervises training of technicians and other laboratory personnel with respect to proper laboratory techniques, use of laboratory equipment, and safety procedures.
  • Confers with industrial, governmental or other groups concerning progress or results of research project.
  • Supervises large group of employees engaged in performance of technical and professional work, which varies from routine to complex laboratory work tasks.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
