POSITION SUMMARY

The phlebotomist performs standardized and specialized phlebotomy procedures on patients of all ages, utilizing proper patient identification and specimen labeling, proper use of isolation precautions, and proper specimen receiving and processing procedures. The phlebotomist will also observe proper disposal of blood drawing equipment according to health and safety regulations. The phlebotomist will communicate patient problems to the clinical team, including clarification or orders and patient health status. Organizational skills and the ability to prioritize testing requests are essential to successful performance of the phlebotomy role.


ESSENTIAL JOB KNOWLEDGE

  • Select appropriate site for venipuncture (arm, hand, leg, ankle, or foot), assemble equipment and collect specimen(s) using correct order of draw and according to policy and procedure.
  • Use proper cleansing and aseptic techniques to collect blood cultures.
  • Collect capillary specimens via skin puncture of finger, big toe, or heel into capillary tube or Microtainer.
  • Verify pediatric orders and minimum blood volumes prior to collection from pediatric patients.
  • Consult with nursing team prior to pediatric collection. Utilize pain abatement or distraction techniques. If available.
  • Perform emergency first aid, as necessary.
  • Ensure test requests comply with laboratory policy and proper documentation is provided.
  • Enter or release patient test orders using the laboratory information system.
  • Supply patients with proper collection supplies (ex., 24-hour urine containers and occult blood collection kits).
  • Ensure proper patient identification and correct test order upon receipt of specimens.
  • Successfully completes initial and ongoing organizational and department education, training, and competency requirements.
  • Infection Control: Understands, demonstrates, and follows organizational infection control guidelines (CDIC).
  • Quality: Focuses on improving processes and champions efficiency in daily work activities.
  • Safety: Promotes a culture of safety by taking accountability for individual actions, including but not limited to, promptly reporting errors or near misses via the organization’s occurrence reporting system and participating in developing improved safety processes, as appropriate. (ADM015, ADM016, OPS044, Mission Statement).
  • Performs other duties as assigned.


JOB REQUIREMENTS

Licenses:

  • State of Wisconsin Driver’s License
  • Phlebotomist certification from the American Society for Clinical Pathology or equivalent preferred.

Education:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Completion of accredited Phlebotomy training program and clinical rotation preferred.

Experience:

  • Must possess six months’ experience in patient care and/or phlebotomy.
  • One year of full-time or part-time equivalent in phlebotomy is preferred.

Miscellaneous:

  • CPR/BLS certification within 3 months of hire is required.
  • Must have effective written and oral communication skills, tolerance to an acute care setting, strong attention to detail, and the ability to work independently.
  • Must possess knowledge of medical terminology related to blood collection, knowledge of safety practices, and demonstrated skill with laboratory information systems.
