We are now hiring Behavior Support Specialists for The Vanguard School’s Extended School Year (ESY) program, a 5 week summer school program designed to help students with special needs maintain academic skills, behavioral goals, and have a little summer fun, too. There are positions supporting our teachers and students in all programs: Elementary School, Middle School, and High School.
This is a GREAT opportunity for professionals already working in special education or college students currently studying special education to meet amazing students and gain new experiences in a supportive and fun environment.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Training in Special Education, Psychology or a related field; Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in behavioral health field preferred.
  • PA teacher certification in special education and/or secondary guidance counseling preferred.
  • Familiarity with applied behavior analysis (ABA) and positive behavior support; formal training in Safety Care™ or other crisis prevention techniques preferred.
  • Two years’ experience working in behavioral health field providing direct services to students on the autistic spectrum and/or with emotional disorders.
  • Ability to engage intellectually and physically with students in need of crisis intervention.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with all constituents (administrators, colleagues, students, parents, and others).
  • Knowledge of correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation, and vocabulary.
  • Ability to use computers and perform clerical skills at a proficient level.
General Duties and ResponsibilitiesThe Behavior Support Specialist is responsible for communicating with Vanguard School staff during the process of maintaining the Vanguard School’s Positive Behavior Support Program. She or he is a positive role model for students and works with the educational team in providing incentives and rewards for students’ demonstration of positive behaviors. The Behavior Support Specialist supports staff and students by providing a consistent presence in classrooms and common areas during transition, lunch, recess and bus arrival and dismissal. Responds to crises in a timely manner, supports the Positive Behavior Support Program, implements strategies identified in students’ Positive Behavior Support Plans, and collects behavior data for subsequent analysis.
Specific Duties And Responsibilities
  • Contributes to and supports school-wide incentive programs to encourage students to achieve behavioral goals.
  • Provides crisis intervention and other assistance needed by staff members to maintain safety.
  • Includes, but is not limited to implementing UkeruTM blocking techniques and the following Safety CareTM techniques: incident prevention and minimization, physical safety, and physical management for students in behavioral and emotional crises.
  • Successfully completes valid Safety Care™ Trainer training and meets Safety Care requirements to maintain active trainer status.
  • Conducts initial and recertification trainings for staff members throughout the year as needed including trainings that are scheduled on non-work days and after work hours.
  • In conjunction with administration and staff members, develops and implements consistent prescriptive discipline procedures appropriate to the individual needs of each student as outlined in the IEP.
  • Regularly meets with staff members to collaborate on classroom management, student-specific behaviors and safety care procedures.
  • Assists the educational staff by supporting teachers in carrying out students’ behavior plans. Schedules time within classrooms to support behavior plan implementation and school-wide positive behavior support protocols.
  • Collects, maintains, and organizes student behavior data and uses this data to evaluate the effectiveness of behavioral interventions.
  • Provides input to the team on possible causes of students’ behavioral problems, and suggests methods of intervention.
  • Demonstrates competency in each of the VFES core values: Communication and Listening, Critical Thinking and Problem Solving, Ethics, Professionalism, and Teamwork.
  • Complies with all organizational policies and procedures including those stated in the VFES Policies & Procedures manual and additional verbal and written communications provided to staff members.
  • Maintains a professional, confidential and ethical relationship with administrators, colleagues, parents, students, and others at all times.
  • Attends and actively participates in staff meetings, in-service activities, and other meetings as required.
  • Maintains proper credentials for assignment and remain educationally informed in all related areas including PDE regulations and state/national standards through continued professional study and attending workshops and conferences.
  • Performs related duties such as bus, lunch, and recess monitoring, special assignments, and projects as assigned.
