Title: Supervisor of Specialized Recreation Services

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Education, Therapeutic Recreation, Psychology or Social Work; Special Education is preferred.
  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience planning, coordinating, and supervising day and overnight camp experiences and other activities for individuals with autism, intellectual disabilities, and other special needs.
  • Experience in the development, administration, and growth of recreational programming and services to include: creating specific activities for specific populations, identifying funding opportunities, promoting activities, hiring and training staff, and ensuring compliance in all program components.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills including public speaking.
  • An experienced leader with exceptional problem-solving and organizational skills.
  • Available to work a flexible schedule including evenings, weekends, and overnight assignments.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and effectively as a team member.
  • Knowledge of correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation, and vocabulary.
  • Ability to engage intellectually and physically in all components of the work process.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with all constituents (administrators, staff, participants, parents, and others).
General Duties And ResponsibilitiesThe Supervisor of Specialized Recreation Services creates, implements, coordinates, and evaluates sensory, behavioral, and cognitive appropriate activities for special needs children, adolescents, and adults. The Supervisor oversees vocational, recreational and respite programs for students, participants, and adults which includes, but is not limited to: social activities, vocational programs, day trips, respite trips, and camp experiences. The Supervisor is responsible for researching opportunities for growth and expansion and presenting recommendations to the Director of Adult and Recreation Services (Director) for consideration.
Specific Duties And Responsibilities
  • Plan, coordinate, and supervise all aspects of recreational, social, and respite programs including: sites/locations, contracts, transportation, meals, staffing, daily activity schedules,
safety, nursing services, and other essential aspects as identified. Work with the ARS Director to develop a plan for a minimum number of recreational activities per month.
  • Develop, maintain, and revise as necessary a yearly plan of activities. Send quarterly event updates to participants, families, and the ARS Director.
  • Maintain records of how many participants attend each activity as well as staffing needed.
  • Ensure all personnel paperwork is complete for all volunteers prior to events.
  • Ensure compliance with external regulatory bodies when indicated.
  • Plan, coordinate and supervise all Vocational Immersion Program (VIP) services.
  • In concert with the Director, solicit interest in transitional, vocational instruction for local public-school districts and local community colleges by outreach and marketing efforts, including face-to-face visits with appropriate individual at school district and/or community college. .
  • Attend marketing events, vendor fairs, associations, schools, and other public or private groups to promote VFES’ recreational programs. Participate in the VFES Camp Expo by staffing the table and addressing visitor questions and comments.
  • Establish an efficient registration process for all program participants to collect personal information, medical history, and other relevant information. Establish assessment tools to determine acceptance criteria as needed. Act as a primary contact for parents throughout the registration process and during the recreational program.
  • Follow established Human Resources procedures to recruit, select, and hire program staff.
  • Coordinate all program staff assignments and schedules based on each activity, including nursing staff. Provide staff training for all programs, specifically all overnight activities.
  • With the Program Resource Coordinator, organize, purchase, and pack program materials and equipment as needed.
  • Directly supervise and actively participate in all recreational programs ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for all participants. This includes overnight activities at the discretion of the Director. .
  • Meet routinely with the ARS Director to update dates, timelines and census for camps, trips or events, provide billing updates and discuss routine supervision agenda items.
  • Establish routine communication process with Directors of The Vanguard School and other Directors of VFES to inform, educate, and build on established programming and to develop evidence-based activities to promote the health and well-being of all participants.
  • Identify and pursue opportunities for growth throughout the continuum of recreation programs for all participants. Research and prepare proposals for consideration by the Director.
  • Participate in the development of annual budget and monitor said budget throughout the fiscal year.
  • Demonstrate competency in each of the VFES core values: Communication and Listening, Critical Thinking and Problem Solving, Ethics, Professionalism, and Teamwork.
  • Comply with all organizational policies and procedures including those stated in the VFES Policies & Procedures manual and additional verbal and written communications provided to staff members.
  • Maintain a professional, confidential and ethical relationship with administrators, donors, colleagues, parents, students, and others at all times.
  • Develop an up to date list of all participant and emails contact information.
  • Attend and actively participate in staff meetings, in-service activities, and other meetings as required and take notes as needed.
