Optometric/Opthalmic Assistant
Valley Health Partners Community Vision Center- Allentown PA
Job Summary
Performs all patient care activities involved with the Optometrist and Ophthalmologists including recording chief compliant, medical history, and reviewing medications. Prepares examination and treatment rooms, performs testing and assists provider with preliminary work, laser procedures and injections. Responsible for recording pertinent ocular findings, patient education for administration of medications, review of treatment plans, pre- and post-operative instructions and ensuring patient receives professional, pleasurable patient experience.
Minimum Requirements: High School diploma, or GED, and minimum of 6 months of relevant experience and/or training, or equivalent combination of education in optometric or ophthalmology practice.
Preferred Requirements: More than one year of experience in an optometrist or ophthalmology practice or an FQHC setting. Bilingual in Spanish or Arabic. Experience within an optical setting (frames selection, dispensing glasses, minor glasses repair, contact lens teaching).
Certification(s): BLS upon hire. Work toward Certified Ophthalmic Assistant or Paraoptometric Certification
Skills:
  • Familiarity with the meaning and use of medical and ophthalmic terminology and abbreviations.
  • Knowledge of patient rights and laws relative to those rights, such as HIPAA.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology to effectively communicate with patients to record initial patient history, including present/chief complaint, past ocular history, family history, systemic illness, medications, allergies, and drug reactions.
  • Excellent computer skills to enter patient history, medication and transcribe physician's dictation into patient charts as needed.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work successfully in a team environment, functioning for the good of the team over the individual.
