Position Summary

The Registered Nurse (RN) will utilize their broad-based clinical knowledge to effectively care and treat patients located in the Spinal Cord Injury/Disorder Inpatient Unit. Registered Nurses as a member of the interdisciplinary team provide care to new and existing spinal cord injury Veterans through rehabilitation and sustaining care. 

Contract Length

This contract is for 1 year with potential to extend each year for up to 5 years in total.

Schedule

This position has required coverage 24 hours a day, 7 days a week including on holidays. 

• Day Shift: (12) hour shift 7:30 a.m. – 8:00 p.m
• Night Shift: (12) hour shift 7:30 p.m. – 8:00 a.m

Responsibilities

• assess the health care needs of the patient and maintain or develop a plan of care to meet interdisciplinary goals
• assess and act on significant changes in the patient’s health condition
• insert IV lines
• care of PICC lines
• administer medication including IVs
• coordinate and participate in admission, transfer, and discharge of patient
• measure vital signs, including Pain (the 5th Vital Sign), pulse oximetry, etc.
• complete EKG as needed
• perform wound care including dressing changes and obtaining wound cultures as necessary
• perform non-acute/acute ventilator care, as needed
• perform suctioning including oral, nasogastric, and tracheostomy
• assist with routine urinary and bowel elimination including indwelling and suprapubic catheters, colostomies, external devices, and digital stimulation
• educate patients and/or families regarding health and diagnoses and medication administration
• activate the Emergency Medical Response as indicated based on patient presentation or change in condition
• perform Continuous Protective Observation (CPO) duties to maintain veteran safety
• provide clinical oversight to Licensed Practical Nurses and Certified Nursing Assistants and Health Technicians
• Rapid Response and Cardiac Arrest (code) response within the unit.

Requirements

• Bachelors of Science in Nursing
• Graduate from a college or university accredited by National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC), or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE).
• Basis Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) 
• Three years of experience in nursing treating spinal injuries and rehab patients. 
• Current, full, active, and unrestricted license for any state or commonwealth to practice as a Registered Nurse
• U.S. Citizenship: Shall be a U.S. citizen.
• Proficiency in EMR/EHR systems and general technology. 
• Successful completion of any necessary federal background check and VA credentialing polices. 
• Heavily Preferred: certification in spinal cord injuries and/or wound care.
