JOB
THE POSITION Under general direction of the Fleet Manager, administers and directs the acquisition, maintenance and servicing of heavy construction equipment, fire engines and trucks, and other motorized equipment in the Ventura County Fire Protection District, and performs related work as required.EDUCATION INCENTIVE: Incumbents may be eligible for an educational incentive of 2.5%, 3.5%, or 5% based on completion of an Associate's, Bachelor's, or Master's degree that is not required for the classification.PAYROLL TITLE: Chief – Heavy EquipmentAGENCY/DEPARTMENT: Fire Protection DistrictChief-Heavy Equipment is a Management position and is exempt from overtime. The position is eligible for benefits at the MB3 level. The eligible list established for this position may be used to fill existing and future regular, temporary, fixed-term, intermittent and extra-help positions within the Fire Protection District. There is currently one (1) vacancy. TENTATIVE SCHEDULE OPENING DATE: Wednesday, June 5, 2024CLOSING DATE: Thursday, June 20, 2024REVIEW OF APPLICATIONS: Week of June 23, 2024ORAL EXAMINATION: Week of July 7, 2024
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
Duties may include, but are not limited to the following: Directs, coordinates, and supervises the operation and staff involved with light and heavy repair, and the parts warehouse.Negotiates with vendors on price, quality, and availability of new and rebuilt parts for equipment; confers with departmental representatives to determine specific needs and general program requirements; prepares equipment specifications and assists the purchasing staff in acquisition of vehicles, equipment, and supplies.Makes spot inspections of work in progress; sets criteria and policies for standard repair and maintenance work.Develops work programs and budget requests; Approves purchase of contractual services.Prepares statistical and narrative reports.Negotiates with private garages for repairs and service of equipment.Selects and supervises the training of new employees and their development.Performs related duties as assigned.

Candidates must earn a score of seventy percent (70%) or higher to qualify for placement on the eligible list. If there are three (3) or fewer qualified applicants, a score of seventy percent (70%) will be assigned to each application, and each applicant will be placed on the eligible list.Candidates successfully completing the examination process may be placed on an eligible list for a period of one (1) year. The eligible list established from this recruitment may be used to fill future Regular (including Temporary and Fixed-term), Intermittent, and Extra Help vacancies for this classification throughout the County.
