Veterans Health Administration is Hiring a Travel Nurse Practitioner (Hematology/Oncology) Near Iowa, IA

Summary

The Advanced Practice Provider for Oncology will perform physical assessments, engage in therapeutic problem solving, counseling, consultation, and provide independent case management. Provide general information about disease, specific information about tests, possible treatments and treatment benefits, self-care information for patients and caregivers. Responsible for acquiring and demonstrating clinical expertise and knowledge of health care programs to improve the quality of patient care.

Qualifications

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.
Basic Requirements:
  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy
  • English Language Proficiency
  • In accordance with 38 U.S.C
  • 7402(d), no person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English
  • Education: A post-master's certificate or master's or doctoral degree as a Nurse Practitioner
  • Nursing education must be from a school of professional nursing accredited by one of the following accrediting organizations at the time the program was completed by the applicant: A) The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN), OR B) The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE)
  • Foreign Education: Graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing programs, the nurse practitioner degree equivalency must be validated through an Agency recognized degree equivalency evaluation agency, such as the International Consultants of Delaware (ICD)
  • Candidates with equivalent Nurse Practitioner masters or doctorate level degrees who possess current, full, active and unrestricted registration and certification will meet the requirement of graduation from anapproved school of professional nursing to warrant appointment
  • License and Certification: All APNs (NPs) must possess and maintain an active, current, full and unrestricted APN license to practice as a NP in a State, Territory or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia
  • AND All APNs (NPs) must maintain full and current board certification in an area of clinical specialty from one of the following: i
  • The American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC); ii
  • The American Academy of Nurse Practitioners Certification Board (AANPCB); or iii
  • Other nationally recognized certifying body in the area in which the Nurse Practitioner is academically prepared
  • Basic certification as a nurse practitioner is a condition of employment and qualifying factor for the specific assignment
  • The required basic certification as a Nurse Practitioner must be identified in support of any position being established or filled as an APN (NP)
  • An approved list of NP/APN certifications may be found on the Office of Nursing site at the Office of Nursing Services
  • Basic certification as a nurse practitioner is a condition of employment and qualifying factor for the specific assignment
  • Grade Determinations: In addition to the basic qualification requirements, the grade level of an APN (NP) is based on a combination of education and experience
  • Beyond the minimum education requirements, grade determination for appointment, advancement and promotion will be based on the following specific requirement for an APN (NP)
  • The level of practice at which an APN (NP) may perform is based upon a combination of many factors
  • Beyond the minimum educational requirements, grade determination, upon appointment and advancement, is dependent upon aspects such as continued professional development (formal and/or informal education), clinical performance, judgment, outcomes (at the service level and beyond), leadership and interpersonal skills that influence, inspire and motivate others within their program/service or beyond
  • As the APN (NP) acquires the knowledge, skills and judgment that accrues with experience, the privilege of increased authority for patient care and service in administrative roles is expanded as applicable
  • APN (Nurse Practitioner) II: Meets basic education requirement for APN (CNS)
  • Nurse II is considered the entry grade level for APN (NPs); no experience is required
  • APN (Nurse Practitioner) III: Meets basic education requirement for an APN (NP) AND One year of specialized APN (NP) experience equivalent to the Nurse II grade level
  • Reference: VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005/160, Part II, Appendix G-6a Advanced Practice Nurse Qualification Standard
  • This can be found in the local Human Resources Office
  • Physical Requirements: The work in generally with daily walking, standing, bending, stooping, reaching, and carrying of moderate weight items required
  • Rigid deadlines and need for high degree of accuracy periodically becomes stressful.

Duties

Oncology Outpatient care in the clinic setting.
This setting is located in a dedicated outpatient space within the Medical Center or a Community VA clinic.
The model for care delivery is based off a team approach to provide hematology/oncology services within the Medical Health Care System.
This position will involve periodic travel to VA Community Based Outpatient Clinics associated with the Iowa City VA Health Care System (e.g.
Quad Cities, Quincy, IL, etc.).
The services provided will be to see Hematology/Oncology patients for diagnosis, treatment, and continuation of care.
The provider utilizes evidence-based practice, and medical guidelines.
The provider works in partnership with Primary and Specialty Care Providers, Care Managers, ancillary services, and a panel of patients for effective cancer care coordination.
Specifically, a Hematology/Oncology staff physician will be available for consultation.
The provider will be proficient in developing the patient-driven holistic care plan for cancer management.
Duties include, but are not limited to: Taking health, social and family histories Performing physical examinations Ordering, interpreting, and following up diagnostic tests.
Initiating consults to other disciplines Collaborating with physicians and other health care providers Providing psychological and emotional support to patients and family members Teaching patient, family, other staff and students Prescribing medications and other therapies within the guidelines of the specific practice agreement Overseeing outpatient, CBOC infusion therapies.
Cleaning RME (Reusable Medical Equipment) per SOP (Standard Operating Procedure) Age-related competencies for clinics include: Assesses patient's stage of development.
Modifies plan of care based on specific adult stage of development, e.g.
physical needs (skin, sensation, digestion, diet, disabilities, combat and/or traumatic injuries, elimination, sleep, mobility, activity, etc.); cognitive needs (cognition, interest, motivation, etc.); psychosocial/spiritual/cultural needs (communication, housing/residence, resources, education, support system, cultural and spiritual beliefs, self-care abilities, etc.).
Educates patients based upon specific stage of development.
Maintains in depth knowledge basis of anatomy, physiology, pathology, interpretation of radiographic, lab reports and other specialized testing.
Utilizes effective communication skills with patient, family, and other professionals.
Assesses individuals by means of health-illness history and physical examination.
Develops and manages a plan of care including the ordering of diagnostic tests, treatments, prescriptions, referrals, consultations, and patient admissions.
Interprets findings to patient, and family members, teaching about diseases and health.
Documents assessment, care plan and follow-up in patient records.
