As a Metal Fabricator Apprentice in the Airport Authority’s Apprentice Employment Program, you will have the opportunity to gain the experience and training that can lead to becoming a Welder/Metal Fabricator.
Metal Fabricator Apprentice
This is a non-career, term job.
Serves in the Structures and Grounds Division in the Airport Maintenance Department at Washington Dulles International Airport.
Participates in a state-approved Airports Authority Trades Apprentice Employment Program to develop the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to become a journey level Welder or Metal Fabricator. Performs progressively complex and responsible metal fabrication work, as knowledge, skills and abilities in the trade increase. Training received is both on-the-job and in a classroom. Performs related functions.
General ResponsibilitiesLearns to fabricate, replace, and/or repairs defective metal parts of airport structures. Learns to evaluate the work, determine design modifications or assembly required, measures, cuts, and shapes new or replacement metal parts and installs into place.
Guided by a full performance Metal Fabricator, learns to perform repairs and preventative maintenance on street and step railings, airport security gates and doors, hangar and roll-up doors, airfield light brackets, barbed-wire fencing, floor and elevator metal stripping, etc.
Learns to design, fabricate, repair and/or install new fixtures for Airport, fire and emergency response equipment; repairs panels bent on trucks, leaks in water tanks, fabricates aluminum and steel boxes to hold fire equipment, etc.
Learns to perform a variety of spot welding and metal repair tasks on mobile equipment and grounds maintenance and street side motor vehicles.
Plans and lays out work from blueprints, sketches, drawings, specifications, work orders, or personal inspection of the item or system to be installed or repaired.
Regularly uses tools (e.g. hammers, wrenches, milling machine, etc.) to modify metals used in assembly or installation.
Assists Welders with assembly of special projects.
Performs recurring duties such as cleaning shop/work area; inputting information and completing work orders via computer for all equipment built, maintained, or repaired.
Drives a pick-up truck or similar vehicle on the airport complex, airside and landside to work sites, and to/from suppliers.
Performs other duties as assigned.

Additional Qualifications/ResponsibilitiesQUALIFICATIONS Must be at least 18 years of age at the time of hire.
Must be eligible to work in the United States.
Ability to learn bodies of knowledge and gain skills in the metal fabrication trade consistent with the schedule for progression as an Apprentice in the Trades Apprentice Employment Program.
Ability to drive a pick-up truck and learn to use similar vehicle.
Ability to work safely and knowledge of the safety rules, regulations and procedures needed to do so.
Ability to speak and write effectively.
Skill in using a computer, computerized work order and time and attendance system.
Ability to successfully complete an Airports Authority background investigation.
EDUCATIONA high school diploma or a Certificate of General Educational Development (GED) at the time of hire.
Completion of at least one trades course (such as Welding, Electrical, HVAC, Plumbing, Automotive Mechanics) in high school OR be currently enrolled in a degree or certificate program at a trades school accredited by an agency recognized by the US Department of Labor.
Certifications And Licenses RequiredA state driver’s license in good standing at the time of hire.
Depending on assignment, may be required to obtain a Class B Commercial Driver License.
NECESSARY SPECIAL FACTORSOperates vehicle airside and landside (requires AOA permit).
Is subject to hold-over and recall on a 24-hour basis for essential services and emergencies such as snow removal.
Required to work various shifts, as needed. May work night hours or weekends.
May bend, stoop, crouch, and work in cramped positions; carries/moves objects weighing 50
pounds; may work at heights of up to 95 feet.
Is exposed to dust, dirt, grease, unpleasant odors, and hazardous fumes and substances; noise from revving diesel engines; flying sparks, glare of torches and heated materials. Wears personal protective equipment as necessary.
Work is typically reviewed in progress and upon completion for quality, quantity, timeliness, teamwork, customer service, and other factors.
