Overview

ABOUT THE POSITION

VHB’s North Carolina team is looking for a talented transportation or environmental community planner to join the Planning & Project Development Group! This is an exciting opportunity to work within a dynamic team, across diverse disciplines, giving you exposure to a wide variety of projects in size and scope. Responsibilities

  • Support with authorship of project-related documentation for a range of transportation planning studies, demographic analyses, and multi-modal / transit-oriented projects
  • Assist in development of planning level studies including feasibility studies, comprehensive plans, and small area plans to support sustainability, transportation, and resilience planning
  • Conduct planning assessments using analytical tools such as GIS to evaluate data, identify trends, and develop documentation to summarize results and recommendations
  • Develop strategic messages that educate the community on the purpose, need, benefits and perceived impacts of transportation projects and programs
  • Participate in community and stakeholder engagement efforts to support the development of planning studies
  • Prepare technical presentations and materials to support information meetings (in person and virtual)
  • Track project deliverable progress in multiple systems and coordinate completion across teams
  • Interfacing with clients and/or regulatory agencies on a daily basis through virtual and/or in-person meetings

 Skills and Attributes

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills and time management
  • Familiarity with transportation planning and sustainability principles and resources (a focus on multimodal transportation preferred)
  • Working knowledge of all Microsoft Office applications, including Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Teams
  • Ability to think critically and solve problems
  • Ability to read and interpret federal and state terminology
  • Ability to manage multiple assignments and work in a high paced team environment
  • Ability to understand and translate complex, technical information into content appropriate for public consumption
  • Self-motivated with attention to detail
  • Commitment to safety, quality, and customer service

Qualifications

  • 3-5years of planning and compliance experience
  • BA in Planning or related area of study relevant to specialization (e.g., Environmental Studies, Urban Planning, Urban Design/Studies, Regional Planning, Sustainability Planning, Economics, Aviation, Civil Engineering, Urban Transportation Planning)
  • Master’s degree a plus
  • Experience related to the oversight of projects and agencies receiving federal and state funding (preferred)
  • Some experience with transit planning and/or NCDOT’s project development process (preferred)
