Our office is located in West LA. Due to the nature of this role's work, the ideal candidate will be able to come and attend in-person design and fit meetings as needed.About The RoleWe are looking for a fast-paced, skilled ready-to-wear designer. This person must be an out of the box thinker who demonstrates passion, knowledge and ingenuity. The right candidate comes with a strong RTW design background, and they have a sharp understanding of fabrics, fit, yarns and costing.
This is an independent contractor position for a two to three month long contract, for up to 30 hours per week. Should the right candidate excel and business needs dictate, there is potential for additional contract terms afterwards.
Responsibilities & Duties
We estimate the hourly rate for this role to be between $ 50.00 and $ 80.00 per hour, with the upper end of this band reserved for candidates with extensive experience and qualifications that matches VIAVIA’s business needs. The contract will be for up to approximately 30 hours per week. This will initially be a two to three month contract. Should the candidate's performance and the business needs dictate, there is potential for a longer contract term afterwards.

Responsibilities & Duties
- Ownership over VIAVIA RTW product from concept and development to production.
- Responsible for creating fashion-forward, on-trend designs that reflect VIAVIA's developing signature style and brand strategy.
- Responsible for market research and working closely with design team on seasonal concepts.
- Follow the range plan set by the merchandisers to build commercial collections.
- Sending out seasonal development based on direction/brand concept.
- Sketching
- Tech-packing
- Preparing and maintaining design decks and boards for internal brand presentations.
- Meeting with mills and vendors.
- Working closely and communicating daily on issues/changes that arise.
- Working closely with the Technical Department for the executing of garment fittings.
- Attend all fittings to help find solutions to any problems that arise during the fitting process.
- Presenting designs to merchandising team & management as requested.
- Making sure that the VIAVIA DNA is seen in each garment.
- 5 years of experience in RTW design
- Strong technical RTW design background. Must have understanding of fabrics, draping and fit.
- Ability to plan out concepts for the season in line with the direction given.
- Strong understanding of stitches and yarns in relationship to costing.
- Strong sketching ability in Procreate and Illustrator
- Ability to multitask with a strong sense of urgency. You can work into multiple deadlines and calendars at high efficiency, and you can prioritize deadlines accordingly.
- High attention to detail. Your instinct is to leave no stone unturned so every specific is correct and thought through.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills; can patiently and effectively communicate with a diverse and multicultural group of peers across time zones and continents
- Highly collaborative team player who believes that feedback is a gift; you can receive and grow from feedback.
- Nimble, scrappy and adaptable with a high sense of urgency. Can thrive in a fast-paced, early-stage startup environment that required multi-tasking, including pitching in to support other persons and teams
- A positive, can-do attitude. You’re not deterred by minor setbacks and are able to swiftly overcome ambiguity
- Will consistently cultivate a culture of inclusion where all team members feel a sense of belonging and can bring their authentic selves to work
- Proficiency in Shopify or a similar e-commerce platform.
- Preferred qualifications: proficiency in Google Workspace, Microsoft Office including Excel, and Adobe Photoshop/Illustrator. Design experience at a contemporary brand is a plus.
