Job Title: Behavioral Intervention Specialist (BIS) 
Job Code: EDT012/Practical Instructor
Shift: Full-Time (40 hours per week on average) and PRN 
Job Hours: Times May Vary
Base Location: Gwinnett/Rockdale/Dekalb 
Division/Department/Program:Crisis Stabilization Units

Under broad supervision, instructs or trains clients and/or students in a specific area of assignment as part of a program that includes an organized agenda of practical and workforce readiness instruction. May serve as lead.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Monitors general client activity, observing, and reporting behavior/progress of clients on the Autism Spectrum.
  • Maintains awareness of clients’ behavior and physical whereabouts to ensure their safety.
  • Observes and becomes familiar with each client’s behavior, specific needs, and necessary supports. Monitors clients for detection of any behavior which could be injurious to self or others, or which is so unusual or atypical that immediate attention of professional staff is warranted.
  • When necessary for the physical safety of the client, uses the least restrictive, agency-approved behavioral or physical intervention technique appropriate for the situation as trained.
  • Secures assistance from and/or helps other staff in handling acute behavioral crisis situations.
  • Maintains the living space and unit in a clean and organized condition to assure a safe, secure, and attractive environment for clients and staff.
  • Records clear, concise, and accurate client data and other documentation in medical records and other program records according to agency policy and applicable standards of care.
  • Assists with Activities of Daily Living such as personal hygiene, toileting, mealtime assistance as needed, etc. Assists with laundering of clothing items, sheets, towels, and other items on the unit as needed.
  • Participates in change of shift meetings, treatment team meetings, staffing, and other sessions to provide the information about each resident necessary for implementation of an appropriate, individualized treatment plan.
  • Attends client specific meetings and trainings, including trainings on clients’ Behavior Support Plans
  • Accurately collects data (paper and/or electronically) on target and replacement behaviors specific to the client’s Behavior Support Plan.
  • Reports changes in client condition to supervisor and Registered Nurse
  • Assists with Activities of Daily Living (toileting, feeding, hygiene, etc.), to meet the needs of the client.
  • Provides important information regarding the client to facilitate appropriate case management and collaboration.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in a related field from an accredited college or university OR Associate's degree from an accredited college or university OR Vocational/Technical degree in area of assignment from an accredited college AND Two years of experience in the area of assignment OR One year of experience required at the lower level Practical Instructor 2 (EDT011) or position equivalent.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Direct Care Experience
  • Experience with individuals being served in a psychiatric hospital, residential, or group home setting preferred.
  • Experience with severe challenging behaviors 

Requirements/Competencies:

  • Must have a bachelor’s degree in a social service-related field AND one year of experience in a related field.
  • Must be able to stand from a kneeling or sitting position without using your hands (Certification Requirement)
  • Must be able to stand, sit, and kneel for long periods of time.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit, move about, hear and speak. 
  • Must be able to lift 20 pounds.
  • Must be able to respond quickly to sounds.
  • Must be able to pass physical requirements of MANDT training (i.e. - standing from knees without using hands, regular transitions from knees to standing, and perform holds)
  • Must be able to restrain an individual over 100 pounds.
  • Must have valid Georgia driver’s license and Motor Vehicle Record in accordance with company policy.
  • Candidates for selection must pass a criminal background check (including fingerprinting)
  • Must pass a pre-employment drug screen and subject to random drug screens.
  • Any combination of training and experience, which would have enabled the applicant to acquire the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities Note: Some positions may require a valid driver's license.
