Director, Human Resources – Viking Mississippi

As a key member of the US Human Resources Team, the Director of Human Resources – Viking Mississippi will plan, lead, direct, develop, and coordinate the policies, activities, and staff of the Viking Mississippi Human Resource (HR) efforts ensuring legal compliance, effectiveness and efficient. 

This position will be based in our New Orleans, LA office, will be on a hybrid work schedule (3 days in office/2 remote) and requires overnight travel (30%)

Responsibilities

  • Along with HR management team and Mississippi leadership team - plans, leads, develops, coordinates, and implements policies, processes, training, initiatives, and surveys to support the organization’s human resource compliance and strategy needs.
  • Administer or oversee human resource programs, of the Mississippi onboard crew and staff including, but not limited to, compensation, benefits, and leave.
  • Manage disciplinary matters, disputes, investigations, performance, and talent management.
  • Along with HR management team, manage recognition, engagement, training and development, occupational health and safety.
  • Ensure Human Resources programs and initiatives are effective, efficient, and aligned with overall business objectives.
  • Administer or oversee payroll, ensuring accurate and timely processing and nationwide compliance.
  • Monitor and ensure the organization’s compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations, and recommended best practices; reviews and modifies policies and practices to maintain compliance.
  • Maintain knowledge of trends, best practices, regulatory changes, and innovative technologies in human resources, talent management, and employment law; applies this knowledge to communicate changes in policy, practice, and resources to management.
  • Facilitate professional development, training, and certification activities for staff.
  • Work closely with onboard HR Manager and onboard leadership team on all activities listed above and other duties as needed
  • Perform other duties as required.

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Recruit, interview, and train Mississippi HR team members.
  • Oversee the daily workflow of the Mississippi HR team, specifically onboarding, payroll, leave management, Maintenance and Cure case management, and employee relations for crew members of the Viking Mississippi.
  • Handle discipline and termination of employees in accordance with company policy.

  • Strong knowledge of employment laws and a strong understanding of current employment regulations and compliance issues.

  • Strategic thinking, ability to assess situations in the context of business strategy that translate into execution, action, and results.
  • Flexible and adaptable style; comfortable navigating through ambiguity.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and to delegate them when appropriate.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software.
  • Ability to learn new software and tools as required
  • Proficiency with or the ability to quickly learn the organization’s HRIS and talent management systems.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or related field required; Master’s degree preferred.
  • 5 years nationwide human resource management experience required.

Preferred Experience

  • Previous travel, tourism, hospitality, retail and/or manufacturing experience a plus
  • Experience with Jones Act / Merchant Marine Act of 1920 and Passenger Vessel Services Act

    • Salary range $150,000-$175,000 annually determined by a myriad of factors including, but not limited to, years of experience, depth of experience, and other relevant business considerations.
