Virginia Beach City Public Schools is Hiring a Welding Teacher Near Virginia, VA

General ResponsibilitiesTeacher - 10-month ExtendedPostiion begins on 08/01/2024Under direction of the school principal, plan and provide for appropriate learning experiences for students. Provide an atmosphere and environment conducive to the intellectual, physical, social, and emotional development of individuals to ensure success for every student. Supervise students in a variety of school related settings. Monitor and evaluate student outcomes. Communicate and interact with students, parents, staff, and community. Develop, select, and modify instructional plans and materials to meet the needs of all students. Maintain appropriate records and follows required procedures and practices. Monitor appropriate use and care of equipment, materials, and facilities.
The Virginia Beach Technical and Career Education Center is seeking a qualified and experienced welding professional to provide highly specialized technical instruction to high school welding students. The teacher is responsible for transferring his/her knowledge and skills in the field of welding to high school students. The teacher should have a strong background in maritime or industrial welding processes. The applicant will utilize research-based theories and strategies to teach, organize and implement structured lessons for students. Work is performed under the supervision of the director of the Virginia Beach Technical and Career Education Center.
Essential Functions
  • Apply knowledge of welding industry for students to gain an understanding of the principles needed to pursue a career in welding.
  • Conduct hands-on training in welding techniques and practices.
  • Teach students how to use welding equipment properly to prevent injuries or damage to materials.
  • Teach students the following welding processes: SMAW (Stick), GTAW (Tig), GMAW (Mig) and FCAW (Flux Core).
  • Develop lesson plans and organize lessons in a logical sequence.
  • Lead students to the acquisition of industry recognized certifications in welding:
    • Workplace Readiness Skills for the Commonwealth,
    • OSHA Safety, and
    • AWS Sense.
  • Make industry connections promoting service learning, cooperative education, and work-based learning opportunities for the students.
  • Assist students as an advisor for their career and technical student organization (SkillsUSA) and facilitate participation in public safety related competitions.
  • Use a variety of assessment techniques and/or models to evaluate student performance.
  • Provide an environment that is safe, orderly, hazard-free, and conducive to learning.
  • Participate in school and district professional development
  • Attending staff meetings and serve on committees as required.
Knowledge, Skills And AbilitiesKnowledge of VBCPS curriculum and techniques for integrating curriculum, VBCPS policies and effective instructional practices; thorough understanding of the teaching and learning process; ability to provide instruction that reflects multiple perspectives and multicultural education; ability to infuse technology into curriculum; ability to work effectively with administrators, colleagues, central office, school based staff, students, parents and community; excellent oral and written communication and human relations skills.
Education And ExperienceRequired: Bachelor's Degree in applicable field of education from an accredited college or university. Must have or be eligible for a teacher license from the Virginia Department of Education.
  • Applicant must have a minimum of 5 years' experience in welding.
  • An in-depth knowledge of the welding industry is required.
  • The applicant must possess, or be eligible for, a provisional Virginia teaching license or Technical Professional license - Upon hire applicant will have 3 years to satisfy all requirements to obtain this endorsement.
  • Previous teaching experience is preferred but not required.
Physical RequirementsMust have the use of sensory skills in order to effectively communicate and interact with other employees and the public using the telephone and personal contact as normally defined by the ability to see, read, talk, hear, handle or feel objects and controls. Frequent sitting, walking, standing, bending, grasping, fingering, repetitive motion, and reaching. Occasional stooping and kneeling. Ability to lift up to 20 pounds frequently and up to 50 pounds rarely. Requires timely and regular adherence to established work schedules. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential tasks.
Special RequirementsPossession of a valid driver's license. Regular and reliable attendance is an essential function of this position.

Salary will be based on job-related creditable years of full-time, verified work experience. Entry-level salary will be awarded at the time of hire. Upon the return of employment verification forms from the candidate's current and previous employers, the salary will be adjusted if creditable full-time experience is confirmed.
