Position Summary:

The Department of Physiology and Biophysics are searching for a dedicated Laboratory Technician to join their drug abuse research team.The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring compliance withinstitutional regulations, conducting bench work including quantitative PCR(qPCR) and Western blotting, and working with laboratory animals such as miceand rats. This role requires meticulous attention to detail, proficiency inmolecular biology techniques, and a commitment to ethical animal researchpractices. The position offers the opportunity to contribute to impactfulresearch that can advance our understanding of drug abuse and potentialtreatments.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Helpingthe PI to comply with institutional regulations (e.g., chemical safety, IACUC,etc.)
  • Effective management of rat and mice colonies
  • Perform bench work (qPCR, western blotting, etc.)
  • Photometry experiments in live animals
Qualifications

Minimum Hiring Standards:

  • Theapplicant must have finished a bachelor’s college degree with a major inbiology, chemistry, biochemistry, or equivalent. Other majors would beacceptable depending on experience
  • Experiencein bench work including western blotting and qPCR
  • Experienceworking with experimental animals (mice and rats)
  • Familiarwith behavioral and live animal protocols
  • Demonstrateexcellent organizational skills including time management and keeping good labrecords
  • Must have a demonstrated commitment to fostering diversity and inclusion in past experiences or a commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Afinal GPA above 3.5 in college is preferable
  • Previousresearch lab experience is preferable
