Dr. Negus is in search of a Laboratory Specialist to join his lab within the School of Medicine's Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology.

Position Summary:

Conduct behavioral studies in lab animals, includinganimal handling, administration of experimental drugs, and both direct andautomated behavioral observations; collection, organization and preliminaryanalysis of data. Oversee record keeping for all scheduled drugs used in thelaboratory. Assume primary responsibility for oversight of care and enrichmentfor laboratory animals. Function as liaison between lab and VCU administrativeentities, including IACUC, OEHS, and DAR. Maintain alldocumentation necessary for compliance with their guidelines and regulations.Operate and maintain research equipment; maintain supplies and researchenvironment. Oversee in-processing and training of new staff members. Ensureeach has taken and passed all required animal-related courses and is properlyregistered with the Division of Animal Resources.

Required Education & Experience: 

  • Must have prior experience (as employee or student)working in a research laboratory
  • Must have a demonstrated commitment to fostering diversity and inclusion in past experiences or a commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU

Preferred Education & Experience: 

Bachelor’sdegree in pharmacology-related discipline (e.g. biology, chemistry, psychology)or extensive related training/work experience. Preference will be assigned toindividuals with (a) prior work experience in a setting that requiresorganization and time management skills, (b) experience working with laboratorymice and/or rats, and (c) coursework and/or research experience in psychopharmacology. Otherdesired attributes include reliability, excellent organizational skills,excellent communication skills, and ability to work independently or as part ofa research team.
