Job Duties
Adult Education Teachers are responsible for providing quality instruction that meets the needs of the student in the areas of basic adult education and GED standards. Additionally, position is required to meet the standards defined under the Commonwealth's statutes and program certification requirements. Position provides individual and group instruction to adult student inmates. Successful candidate will maintain classroom, equipment, and inventories; ensure compliance with all DOC regulations; maintain accurate records and submit timely reports; and manage and supervise aides and students in a classroom setting.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree from accredited college or university in a relevant educational field. Experience teaching adults/youth is required. Experience in maintaining classroom, equipment, and inventories. The ability to engage students in one-on-one teaching of all the five subjects and supervise students and aides in a classroom setting; the ability to maintain accurate records and submit data to testing staff to get students tested in a timely manner. Knowledge and experience of policy and procedure governing adult education. Must possess working knowledge of all facets of the basic adult education field, adult literacy, and computer software appropriate for program needs. Demonstrate competency in the relevant field of current licensure. Must have the ability to collaborate with other Correctional Education staff. Willing to learn and assist with administrative tasks regarding college programming as needed.
Must possess a Collegiate Professional or Postgraduate Professional Teaching License from the Virginia Department of Education or qualify for reciprocity from another state and without deficiencies.

Note: Successful candidates are responsible for any renewal points to maintain a teaching license under the guidelines of Virginia Department of Education to comply with the requirements for continued employment in this position. If seeking reciprocity from another state, candidates must submit all documentation for a Virginia Teaching License within 90 days of employment and satisfy all requirements within a year.
Additional Considerations
Specialty training or licensure endorsement in Math or Science. Experience teaching adults and or youth in a correctional or alternative education setting. Knowledge and experience of policy and procedures governing adult correctional education. Knowledge of correctional education classroom management. The ability to supervise students and inmate aides in the correctional facility; knowledge of the Department of Corrections (DOC) institutional policies and procedures.
