Piedmont Geriatric Hospital (PGH) is seeking a Counselor I – Social Worker to join its growing team in Burkeville, Virginia.
The individual in this role will plan, organize and implement a full range of social work services for older adults dealing with mental illness, promoting recovery in patients as they transition back into their communities. Some responsibilities and duties involved in this role:
  • Completing ongoing assessments
  • Providing treatment to patients and coordinates discharge
  • Serving as an active member of the PGH interdisciplinary treatment team
  • Planning and implements treatment goals based on sound therapeutic approach
  • Providing education and support services to the patient’s primary support system
  • Maintaining productive contact with significant others, referring agencies, and community resources
  • Assisting with program development and performance improvement as needed

  • Working knowledge of available social, economic, and community resources
  • Knowledge, skills and ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing
  • Ability to independently carry out work actions/job responsibilities thoroughly and timely
  • Ability to individually, and in conjunction with interdisciplinary teams, develop goals and implement treatment plans according to client’s needs
  • Ability to interview and gather medical and psychosocial data and interpret it in oral and written reports
What is Piedmont Geriatric Hospital?
PGH is a 123-bed, gero-psychiatric hospital, operated by the Virginia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services (DBHDS). PGH is Virginia’s only state Mental Health Facility solely dedicated to evaluation and treatment of persons aged 65 and older. The goal of care is to facilitate discharge to a less restrictive setting by assisting patients to improve and/or maintain their physical, mental and social functioning.

PGH is located in the picturesque rural setting of the Southside region of Virginia. PGH is just 60 miles from the state capital (Richmond), 65 miles from the Blue Ridge Mountains, and 144 miles from the waves of Virginia Beach.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited Social Work Program
  • Experience in Case Management in a Social Work role
Preferred Qualifications
  • Knowledge or experience working with older adults in behavioral health is preferred but not required
