Job Summary:
Join our team at VISIONS/Services for the Blind and Visually Impaired as a Program Assistant to make a meaningful impact on the lives of individuals with visual impairments. As a Program Assistant, you will play a vital role in providing support, guidance, and empowerment to participants, fostering an inclusive and engaging environment.
The VISIONS Pre-College Program was developed specifically to meet the needs of students who are blind who are considering attending college after they graduate high school. The program addresses the educational, social, recreational, mobility and residential aspects of the college experience. The program is also designed to assist in making a determination as to the readiness and potential success of the participants as college enrollees. The students take an Intro to College Life course, as well as a distance learning writing course. Workshops related to college life and weekend excursions are offered to build social skills.
Duties:
- Collaborate with the Director and Assistant Director to facilitate recreational, educational, and social activities for participants.
- Serve as a mentor to participants, offering guidance for social and academic adjustment, empowering self-esteem, and encouraging personal growth.
- Organize and lead weekly evening activities to promote socialization, inclusion, and excitement within the program community.
- Assist participants with homework assignments, technology use, and daily living activities as needed.
- Monitor participant safety on and off-campus, ensuring a secure and supportive environment during camp activities and trips.
- Uphold campus and program policies and procedures while maintaining dormitory areas and communal spaces.
- Report participant progress, challenges, and any incidents promptly to the Director.
- Contribute to the setup and execution of end-of-program ceremonies and events.
- Collaborate with fellow Counselors for event planning and supply management.
Requirements:
- Current college student or recent graduate in a related field (majoring in human services is a plus).
- Minimum age of 21 years old.
- Willingness to reside on campus and share dormitory accommodations during the camp period.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Google Suite, email communication, and telecommunication platforms (Zoom, Teams).
- Desire and ability to work with individuals who are blind or visually impaired.
- Availability to work extended hours in a residential setting for the duration of the program (July 12 - August 9).
- Ability to accept guidance, supervision, be organized, self-starting, assertive, resourceful, and goal-oriented.
At VISIONS/Services for the Blind and Visually Impaired, we offer a competitive salary of $4,875 for the specified period. This full-time exempt position is located at our VISIONS Pre-College Program at Manhattanville University in Purchase, NY.
