YOUTH SERVICESWith the help of family, school and community, today’s youth have a greater possibility of shifting their own futures to become self-sufficient leaders of tomorrow. VOALA offers support and a wide variety of educational and empowerment services as well as scholarships to help young people in our communities become thriving adults.
Education – Upward BoundVOALA’s Upward Bound program aims to bring educational opportunities to youth and their families as they navigate their journey toward educational attainment. The goal of Upward Bound is to increase the rate at which participant’s complete secondary education and enroll in and graduate from post-secondary education. In order to accomplish this, VOALA provides a large range of assistance and programming including after-school academic instruction in core subjects and foreign languages, as well as PSAT, SAT, and ACT test preparation. Career exploration and mentoring are also an integral component to assist community youth in deciding on potential college majors and career options.
VOALA also provides college and career planning workshops, a summer program, individualized academic planning and counseling, financial aid advising, scholarship and application assistance, supplemental Saturday instruction and weekly tutoring as well as college and cultural field trips and an alumni program.
Education – Education Talent SearchVOALA’S Education Talent Search (ETS) program helps to encourage low income and potential first generation college students to complete secondary school; enroll in postsecondary education; and seek financial aid. Providing support and information on all aspects of planning for admission to – and graduation from – a post-secondary institution. The primary focus of the ETS program is to identify low-income, first-generation students who are at risk of dropping out of high school. ETS provides advancement information to assist students in graduating from high school, completing their A-G requirements, and assisting them in planning for college entrance exams as well as college and financial aid applications, as well as career development assistance.
Job Summary And PurposeThe Director of Talent Search administers the operations of Upward Bound North Hollywood and Talent Search programs, leading a staff of instructors and tutors, as well as specially trained individuals. The Director ensures the operations of the programs follow established policies, standards and procedures per EDGAR regulations, and other TRIO programs. The Director is responsible for the management of program activities, supervision of staff, compliance with federal, state, local, and funder requirements, record keeping of fiscal and student data, and evaluation of program objectives.
Duties And Responsibilities
  • Direct a full range of professional and para-professional employees in efficient program operations
  • Develop strategic plans consistent with the mission of the TRIO Programs
  • Develop and facilitate various college prep and parent workshops
  • Develop and facilitate college and career planning seminars
  • Plan and conduct academic, recreational, and cultural activities for project participants
  • Administer assessment inventories and interpret test results to determine participants needs
  • Responsible for maintaining accurate and updated statistical data for required reports
  • Responsible for preparing and submitting Annual Performance Report by the government published deadline
  • Responsible for the development of non-federal resources to support project activities
  • Evaluate program effectiveness and make recommendations to senior management (CEO, COO, CFO, Director of HR) and the Grantee for program changes and improvements
  • Responsible for maintaining accurate and updated statistical data for required reports
  • Responsible for preparing and submitting Annual Performance Report by the government published deadline
  • Responsible for the development of non-federal resources to support project activities
  • Advise senior management regarding future program direction
  • Develop and maintain harmonious relationships with the Grantee and other TRIO programs, as well as target schools and community agencies.
  • Hire and retain appropriate staff, ensuring career development and succession planning
  • Monitor program compliance to funding sources' regulations as well as internal policies and procedures
  • Remain current on trends in secondary education and youth outreach, ensure the professional growth and career development of staff.
  • Other duties as directed by the Director Youth Services
QualificationsREQUIREMENTS:
  • Must be able to pass a fingerprint clearance, background check, including criminal history, personal references, employment and education verifications
EDUCATION:
  • Masters’ degree in education, human services, social work or a related field
EXPERIENCE:
  • Minimum of 4 years supervisory experience.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience managing educational programs
  • Strong knowledge of Programmatic standards of operation, applicable federal, state, local, rules and regulations.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • 3 years of relevant professional experience working in a program with disadvantaged and at-risk youth
  • Knowledge of academic and child development services, development of individualized services plans
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish
