SML North America (NA) is a part of SML and has about 1,000 employees across the United States, Canada and Mexico. We operate the Central Distribution Center in Byhalia, MS as well as Regional Distribution Centers across the NA region.

Mission/Purpose of the Position

The Payroll and Timekeeping Specialist is a member of the Labor Relations team and a part of the People and Culture (HR) function within SML NA. This is a hands-on role with the opportunity to contribute toward the strategic objectives of the larger People and Culture team. This position is responsible for timekeeping and payroll administration, specifically for the timely and accurate delivery of payroll, attendance coding, as well as administration of various aspects of the collective bargaining agreement (CBA).

You will report to the Manager, Labor Relations and will be located in Byhalia, MS. The Byhalia Central Distribution Center is a one million square foot facility located approximately 25 miles southeast of Memphis, TN and employs approximately 550 employees.

Essential Functions

  • Maintain the timekeeping system, including all punch records for bargaining unit employees
  • Complete all timekeeping approvals such as manually entering: ETO, FMLA, WC, bereavement, etc.
  • Approve all exception time, such as all OT worked
  • Change schedules daily to capture current hours worked
  • Complete payroll changes including, enrollment of new hires, wage progressions, schedule changes, org changes, etc.
  • Research payroll discrepancies and process corrections including issuing of pay cards
  • Process of manual adjustments, such as grievance payments
  • Entry of daily attendance coding for absences, tardies, and early exits and support the attendance management program
  • Calculate vacation eligibility for bargaining unit employees
  • Maintain accurate records of vacation and floater holidays
  • Comply with Court Orders, Garnishments, Tax Liens, and Wage and Hour Laws
  • Create and analyze various payroll, hours worked and attendance reports
  • Other duties as assigned

Minimum Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Business, Human Resources or other related field or equivalent experience with primary responsibility for time and attendance and/or payroll administration and processing
  • Experience working with multiple 3rd party timekeeping and/or payroll software systems (SAP, TMW, ADP) is strongly preferred
  • Experience in a bargaining unit environment with Collective Bargaining Agreements (CBA) administration is strongly preferred

  • As all documentation is in English, proficiency in the English language is required
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to network effectively across a diverse organization and build enduring relationships across functional and geographical areas
  • Thorough knowledge of US employment and labor law, as well as HR professional practices
  • Strong problem-solving, negotiating and conflict resolution skills, and the ability to be flexible and change directions when needed
  • Ability to facilitate meetings with diverse groups, resolve conflicts and support resolution to a positive outcome
  • Ability to work independently and make independent decisions, ensuring high levels of collaboration with stakeholders and subject matter experts
  • Ability to work collaboratively with operational leadership and union officials at all levels within the organization
  • Ability to contribute to continuous improvement efforts
  • Detail oriented, analytical and interested in using data for insights
  • Excellent computer skills (Microsoft Office 365)
  • High degree of confidentiality, integrity and ethical standards
