What You'll Be DoingAre you a highly organized, detail-oriented individual who has a Geographic Information Systems (GIS) background and a desire to be a part of the elections process? If the answer is YES, then keep reading because this just may be the opportunity you’ve been looking for! The Wake County Board of Elections is currently seeking a GIS Specialist to join our elections team. The GIS Specialist plays a critical role in overseeing the maintenance of all address segments associated with Wake County voters and providing an advanced level of mapping knowledge to create GIS layer files to visually display data to support decision-making processes.
What will you do as a GIS Specialist?
  • Supervise one Senior Mapping Technician
  • Maintain and update Wake County Board of Elections registered voter addresses
  • Coordinate with the county and municipalities to acquire and update Corporate Limit Annexation boundaries following NC General Statutory regulations
  • Utilize GIS software to create new map layer files containing all active jurisdictions for a particular election
  • Publish layers to internal iMaps for staff use
  • Work with teams to determine the need for digital data or maps
  • Research, analyze and update Wake County voter addresses for statutorily required redistricting
  • Create and present data driven solutions for managing voter population growth to our 5-member bipartisan board to aid in the splitting of precinct line boundaries
  • Follow GIS and IT standards, policies and procedures in the management of the GIS platform
  • Enhance personal proficiency and knowledge of GIS, county information systems and related technologies
  • Stay current with GIS industry trends/expertise and explore ways to effectively apply knowledge, skills and abilities to the work of Wake County Board of Elections
  • Perform technical and administrative procedures to ensure timely and accurate elections
  • Provide customer service and communicate with the public in-person, over the phone and by email
About Our TeamThe Wake County Board of Elections is responsible for conducting all elections held in Wake County. The Board locally administers State election laws. Principal functions include establishing election precincts and voting sites; appointing and training Precinct Officials; preparing and distributing ballots and voting equipment; canvassing and certifying the ballots cast in elections and investigating any voting irregularities. It maintains voter registration and participation records and provides public information on voters and elections. This position is in-person and will work at the Board of Elections Operations Center.
Required The Basics (Required Education and Experience)
  • Associate's degree in Computer Science, Geographic Information Systems or related field
  • Two years of experience in geographic information systems
  • Equivalent education and experience are accepted

Beyond the Basics (Preferred Education and Experience)
  • Experience in use of modern Geographic Information Systems tools and concepts, data and applications
  • Experience working at a County Board of Elections office
  • A valid driver’s license
  • Clear financial and criminal records check
