Waldorf School of Lexington is Hiring a First Grade Assistant Teacher Near Lexington, MA

Waldorf School of Lexington (WSL) is currently accepting applications for a First Grade Assistant Teacher for the 2023-24 school year. In addition to supporting the lead teacher and children, the assistant’s duties include:
  • Setting up and arranging the classroom each morning; helping with cleanup.
  • Assisting and supporting the Lead Teacher when children arrive each morning, during class, snack, and recess.
  • Supporting children during transitions, classroom activities, bookwork, etc. This may involve correcting pencil grip, sitting posture, etc.
  • Participating in some classroom activities, speech work, flute work, etc.
  • Serving as another set of “eyes” for the Lead Teacher, observing children on all levels – academically, physically, socially, etc.
  • Working with students individually who need extra help as directed by the Lead Teacher
  • Assist in classroom management as needed, including resolving behavioral/social conflicts. 
  • Supervising recess duty, learning how the Lead Teacher works with the class during free play and then assuming more leadership responsibilities during the course of the year.
  • Taking over leadership of the class when the Lead Teacher is absent. 
This is an hourly, part-time, non-benefited position for the 2023-24 school year. The schedule for this position is 7:30 a.m. to 3:15 p.m., Monday through Friday.
Qualifications
  • The ideal candidate will have a B.A. degree; demonstrated interest in the philosophy and methods of Waldorf education; elementary teaching experience; energy, commitment, and vitality for working with elementary-aged children; and the ability to take direction from, and work closely with, flexibly and collaboratively with the Lead Teacher, colleagues and administration. Waldorf training and/or teaching experience is preferred.

WSL is situated 12 miles west of Boston in historic Lexington, Massachusetts—an area rich with culture, historical significance, and natural beauty. Abutting our campus is a 185-acre nature preserve that features a sports field, several play gardens, a vegetable garden, and beehives.
