Washington University in St. Louis is Hiring a Professor of Practice/Program Director (Part-time) - Engineering - Applied Computer Science Near St Louis, MO

Position Summary

This position is part-time and benefits eligible.

Hours may vary to provide coverage of classes and events. Evening program and occasional weekend activities; events may occur outside of traditional work hours.

The Professor of Practice/Program Director provides oversight of and teaching of graduate students in the Master of Applied Computer Science (MACS) program, a part-time online program offered in partnership through the McKelvey School of Engineering’s Sever Institute and the School of Continuing & Professional Studies. This position focuses on all teaching and educational activities for the program, particularly the instruction and retention of diverse student populations in this program and ensuring the quality of this program, and is responsible for faculty management, assisting with student advising, and recruitment.

Job Description

Primary Duties & Responsibilities:

Instruction and Curriculum Development

  • Teach courses based on the program curriculum using industry expertise and unique professional experience and in a manner that advances student knowledge.
  • Develop, assess, and improve courses. This may involve, but is not limited to, research and engagement with user groups, industry leaders, and other academic/higher education organizations.
  • Assist in the implementation and maintenance of a relevant, high-quality curriculum.
  • Collaborate with external individuals and organizations to foster student opportunities for innovative practical experiences.

Faculty Management

  • Enhance teaching and learning methods.
  • Assist in the hiring/vetting/recruiting of faculty to teach in the program that are experts in their field of topic.
  • Ensure adjunct faculty are knowledgeable of WashU rules and regulations.
  • Assist in the peer evaluation of faculty teaching in the program.
  • Substitute for other instructors when necessary.

Student Recruitment and Program Promotion

  • Provide program information to prospective students. Assist with promotional activities and conduct interviews.
  • Assist in making final decisions on student admission to the program.
  • Engage program alumni to recruit new students and guest lecturers, create networking opportunities.
  • Communicate with outside organizations to secure opportunities for student projects, case studies, internships, and employer recruiting.

Student Advising

  • Maintain regular office hours and availability for students to discuss questions regarding the program, course content, or suggestions of courses to take in the future.
  • Coordinate with support staff on necessary course substitutions, intent to graduate, independent study, and discipline/failure to perform paperwork.

  • Ability to learn about and speak in-depth on the graduate program in Applied Computer Science.
