Position SummaryThe Washington University School of Medicine Operations & Facilities Management Department provides a range of services for the medical campus in a customer-focused, efficient, and sustainable manner.
Operations & Facilities Management maintains 61 university buildings and provides operational, planning, and construction services to over 8.3 million gross square feet of space. We will open three new facilities between 2023 and 2025 with over 1.5M BGSF. In addition, the School of Medicine continues expanding its reach on and off campus in teaching, clinical care, and research. Our team plays a vital and important role in delivering care, research, and education.
Supervises the daily routine of custodial employees assigned to the area and assists shift supervisor with scheduling and coverage problems. Serve as working lead to ensure all phases of job tasks are completed daily; observe work performance, quality, and quantity; identify training needs and advise custodial supervisor.
Job DescriptionPrimary Duties & Responsibilities
  • Serves as Team Leader for safety to discuss and provide proper PPE to custodial staff.
  • Conducts regular team meetings.
  • Canvass all areas daily, conducting spot checks for thoroughness and quality.
  • Supervises and trains custodial workers on such tasks as general cleaning, stripping and waxing floors; buffing floors; extracting carpets; and reporting daily progress to supervisor.
  • Perform custodial inspections to ensure the quality of work in assigned areas.
  • Perform building inspections for quality assurance (cleanliness, cosmetic repairs, etc.).
  • Compile a weekly list of supplies needed.
  • Order and distribute cleaning supplies, chemicals, and equipment.
  • Ensure that all keys and pagers are checked in and out according to department procedures.
  • Learn and apply knowledge of the schedules, procedures; and use of equipment and supplies used in custodial work.
  • Works with the supervisor on staffing, paperwork, scheduling issues, and monthly quality assurance inspections.
  • Communicate effectively at all levels, both orally and in writing.
  • Instruct assigned personnel in the proper manner or execution of responsibilities.
  • Assign and review the work of direct report custodial staff.
  • Work independently with little supervision.
  • Assist supervisor with continuous training for current employees.
  • Act as Supervisor in the absence of the Supervisor.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Working Conditions
  • 3rd shift schedule is typically Sunday – Thursday, 10:00 PM – 6:30 AM.
  • Some weekends and overtime may be required.
  • Exposure to chemicals.
  • Typically bending, crouching and stooping.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Some college.
  • Supervisory experience.
  • Must be competent in cleaning techniques and all phases of floor care.
  • Ability to plan and organize activities and work cooperatively with people.
  • Have good decision-making skills.
  • Follow safe working practices to ensure safety for themselves and others.
  • Have the ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to utilize computers for communication and documentation.
  • Ability to read and have the ability to determine proper dilution of chemicals and other products.
Required Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent high school certification and two to three years’ experience in the custodial industry.
  • REQUIRED LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRATION: Must have a valid Missouri CDL/Class E driver license or Illinois Class D license.

Salary Range
$45,600.00 - $75,300.00 / Annually
The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
