TRANSPORTATION ROUTERSummary DescriptionUnder general direction of the Director of Transportation and the supervision of the Transportation Systems & Logistics Manager, the Transportation Router is responsible for maintaining and developing the Transportation Integrated Routing System using GIS software and other applicable software applications. The Transportation Router will analyze demographic patterns to plan for future impacts of student population changes and movements. Other responsibilities include but are not limited to: responding to requests concerning student transportation, analyzing impacts to parents, the District, and the Transportation Department of proposed school planning and development issues, performing field GPS functions and uploading captured data into the Transportation GDB (geodatabase), maintaining Transportation GIS databases in accordance with established WCSD GIS Standards, coordinating with community, county/city, and District initiatives to enhance and improve the safe, effective, and efficient transportation of students. Incumbent performs related work as required.
Exemplary Duties/Responsibilities
  • Provides the Transportation Department, other departments, outside vendors, and the public with geospatial information
  • Updates and revises district maps based upon new developments and new streets
  • Updates and revises street listings available in the District
  • Answers telephone inquiries regarding student transportation questions
  • Coordinates the pertinent Infinite Campus data in the GIS
  • Works closely with WCSD Transportation staff to ensure that all units utilize the same database version of streets, bus stops, routes, and school attendance zones
  • Performs field work with GPS units to capture and process data using approved methods and standards
  • Works with WCSD Communications to facilitate the implementation of web-accessible internet and intranet Transportation applications
  • Determines and executes the appropriate sequence of processing tasks in order to appropriately complete a GIS automation assignment
  • Digitizing data, building topology, checking for label errors, integrating spatial data, and creating final plots
  • Performs basic system administration duties by making backup copies of the database
  • Cleans and maintains the graphic equipment
  • Designs and prepares various cartographic products for presentation and for departmental staff and other departments
  • Collects data for mapping from various sources and verifies the accuracy of materials and data sources
  • Completes day-to-day tasks such as attributing records, designing and digitizing maps and/or geographic feature data into various data layers within the GIS
  • Assists with database maintenance
  • Fills in as a Bus Driver or Pupil Transportation Assistant when needed
  • Performs other duties as assigned
EMPLOYMENT STANDARDSEducation/Experience: Any education and experience that would provide the required knowledge and skills is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and skills would be:
  • High School diploma; some college preferred, but not required;
AND
  • Two (2) years of full-time experience in the automation and maintenance of a GIS database OR demonstration of computer system knowledge; utilization of database, spreadsheet, and word processing applications, and the manipulation of data in specific applications using recognized standards and procedures. Preference will be given to those with prior GIS use and/or training.
Knowledge of: School transportation procedures; District policies and procedures; computerized system procedures and operations; office machine functions and operations, including scanners, larger format laser and inkjet printers, photocopiers, facsimile machines, telephone, and other related equipment.
Skill at: Performing data entry and processing procedures; dealing with telephone calls from the public and school personnel; handling multiple responsibilities simultaneously; sequencing processing tasks; operating various types of equipment used for computer automated systems; interpreting and applying regulations, policies, and procedures, communicating effectively, both orally and in writing; maintaining effective working relationships with outside vendors, department staff, and representatives of other departments; working collaboratively and in a team environment; communicating effectively about databases and their appropriate use; demonstrating own initiative when not otherwise provided direction; and organizing complex tasks and managing multiple priorities using office equipment.
Special Considerations: Must be willing and able to work a flexible schedule and to attend meetings outside the regular work hours and travel as directed to meetings outside the Reno/Sparks area; willing and able to conduct periodic field data collection in outdoor environments with potential exposures to extreme heat and cold; able to move objects weighing up to 25 pounds; able to sit for extended periods; and willing and able to upgrade GIS skills periodically, as appropriate. College education and prior GIS use and/or training preferred.
Licenses/Certificates: Possession of or ability to obtain a valid Nevada State Class B Commercial Drivers License (CDL) with Passenger and School Bus Endorsements, with a driving record acceptable to the District. CPR Certification required.
Physical Demands: The work is sedentary. Typically, the employee sits comfortably to do the work. However, there may be some walking; standing; bending; carrying of light items, such as papers, books, or small parts; or driving an automobile. No special physical demands are required to perform the work.
Work Environment: The environment involves everyday risks or discomforts that require normal safety precautions typical of such places as offices, meeting and training rooms, libraries, residences, or commercial vehicles, e.g., use of safe work practices with office equipment, avoidance of trips and falls, observance of fire regulations and traffic signals. The work area is adequately lighted, heated, and ventilated.
