The purpose of this position is to make a significant contribution to the success of WaterOne by performing audits and consulting reviews, making recommendations to enhance controls, and identifying potential cost savings and process efficiencies. The function, objectives, authority, accountability and reporting of the Audit Department is expressed in Board Policy.

  • Supervise the Audit Department established by Board Policy.
  • Review and evaluate the adequacy of financial, operational, and compliance related controls, promoting effective controls at reasonable cost including risk and control management
  • Evaluate WaterOne’s compliance with established policies, procedures, bond resolutions, and statutory requirements.
  • Evaluate the reliability of information developed within WaterOne.
  • In coordination with the Manager – Risk Management, develop the annual audit plan and scope of audits based upon the areas of greatest risk to WaterOne.
  • Oversee the annual audit activities with external auditors and ensure publication of the annual financial statements in accordance with Kansas Statutes.
  • Interact with WaterOne management concerning Audit activities.
  • Review and evaluate proposed processes and computer-based systems.
  • Review and monitor key performance indicators of the team’s activities, ensuring high quality of work performed.
  • Review and maintain an Audit Strategic Plan to guide the focus of the team and ensure alignment with WaterOne’s and Audit’s Strategic Goals.
  • Maintain a system to monitor internal audit report open issues to resolution.
  • Develop Audit staff members by providing job coaching, constructive and motivating feedback, individual development plans, and annual performance appraisals.
  • Assist in drafting, reviewing and approving reports to formally communicate results of audit activities.
  • Initiate training activities as required for the development of departmental personnel.
  • Perform personnel-related duties such as interviewing and selecting new employees.
Other Duties
  • Assist in the coordination of the external auditor selection process.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Education, Skills & Experience
  • Requires undergraduate degree from an accredited four-year college with an emphasis in Accounting, Finance, or Information Technology preferred.
  • Five years of experience performing audits, including two years of experience managing audit assignments plus two years of supervisory experience. Note: An equivalent combination of post-graduate education, experience and professional certification may be considered.
  • Requires advanced knowledge of principles and practices related to auditing and accounting; information technology; theories of management; internal controls; and assessment of business risks.
  • Requires advanced knowledge and extensive practical experience in PC based applications including Microsoft Excel, Word, SharePoint, and PowerPoint.
  • Requires tact and diplomacy to discuss and resolve audit issues with management.
  • Requires excellent written and oral communications skills.
  • Requires project management skills with the ability to lead in a team environment, maintaining effective working relationships with employees at all levels of the organization.
  • Excellent analytical skills, and a strong aptitude for detail.
  • Must be decisive and exercise good judgment.
  • Requires an inquisitive, creative, self-starter who consistently exercises good judgment and problem-solving skills.
  • Must be able to maintain confidentiality.
  • Maintain professional demeanor.
  • Must be willing to continue professional development through involvement in professional organizations and in continuing education.
  • Must pass post-offer background verification and drug screen (may not apply to current employees).
Preferred Education, Skills & Experience
  • Designation of CPA, CIA, CFE, CISA, or CGAP.
  • Experience with enterprise resource planning software such as SAP.
