Duties
As a Data Scientist you will:
  • Define and develop statistical and advanced analytic methods and solutions for a variety of high-profile data science projects.
  • Gather data from multiple sources, data processing, exploratory data analysis, anomaly detection, measurement, unstructured data analysis, interpretation of findings, predictive & prescriptive modeling, presentation, and system automation.
  • Use various models that consist of a set of processes in an application that transforms data into useful knowledge and communicated across various organizations.
  • Use the application of various tools and techniques to produce findings and insights from structured and unstructured data.
  • Use current data science methods and tools to plan and conduct research using public health data systems, including survey data, health care facility data, syndromic surveillance data, electronic records, vital records, and non- traditional data sources such as social media and unstructured web-based data.
  • Provide analysis and support data interpretation to both technical expert and lay users of public health data that include structured and unstructured data, such as free text, images, and data of mixed types.

Conditions of Employment
Due to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC's) process enhancement to use Shared Certificates throughout the Agency, some of the requirements below may differ:
  • US Citizenship required.
  • Males born after December 31, 1959 must be registered or exempt from Selective Service (see http://www.sss.gov ).
  • May be subject to a Background/Security Investigation. Security clearance level may differ from the position announced when certificates are shared .
  • CDC participates in the USCIS Electronic Employment Eligibility Verification Program ( E-Verify ). E-Verify helps employers determine employment eligibility of new hires and the validity of their Social Security numbers.
  • Direct deposit is required.
  • One-year probationary period may be required.
  • This position may be subject to a Collective Bargaining Agreement.
  • Time in grade (TIG) must be met within 30 days of the closing date of the announcement.
  • This position may be subject to the OGE Financial Disclosure requirements of the Ethics in Government Act of 1978 (P.L. 95-521). CDC inspires public confidence in its trust responsibilities and mission by maintaining high ethical principles. If selected, you may be required to complete a Confidential Financial Disclosure Report (OGE Form 450) to determine if a conflict or an appearance of a conflict exists between your financial interest and your prospective position with the agency. If identified, this will be an annual requirement.
  • In accordance with Executive Order 12564 of September 15, 1986, The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) is A Drug-Free Federal Workplace. This position may require a Drug Test and be subject to Random Drug Testing. The position may require the submission of a urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment and be subject to reasonable suspicion and post-accident drug testing upon hiring. If required to submit to urinalysis, the appointment to the position will be contingent upon a negative test result.
Qualifications
All qualification requirements must be met by the closing date of the announcement.
Basic Qualifications:
  • Degree: Mathematics, statistics, computer science, data science or field directly related to the position. The degree must be in a major field of study (at least at the baccalaureate level) that is appropriate for the position.
OR
  • Combination of education and experience: Courses equivalent to a major field of study (30 semester hours) as shown in paragraph A above, plus additional education or appropriate experience.
Minimum Qualifications:
Applicants must have one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-12 experience performing scientific activities and analyses related to advance computation, statistical and machine learning technologies and algorithms, artificial intelligence, or data mining.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
Education
Copy of your transcripts or equivalent documentation is required for positions with an education requirement, or if you are qualifying based on education or a combination of education and experience. An official transcript will be required if you are selected.
College or university degree generally must be from an accredited (or pre-accredited) college or university recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. For a list of schools which meet these criteria, please refer to Department of Education Accreditation page .
  • FOREIGN EDUCATION: Education completed in foreign colleges or universities may be used to meet the requirements. You must show proof the education credentials have been deemed to be at least equivalent to that gained in conventional U.S. education program.
