Responsibilities

We are seeking an Environmental Sampling Specialist with a relevant technical degree and experience in environmental field sampling of various environmental media. This role is a field-based position that will involve the following tasks:

• Groundwater sampling using various sampling equipment and methodologies, including bailer, various pumps (low flow sampling), and passive sampling
• Landfill leachate sampling
• Surface water sampling (streams and stormwater)
• Gas sampling from landfill gas probes (methane, CO2 and O2)
• Soil gas sampling for volatile organic compounds (VOCs)
• Oversight of soil borings (including detailed textural descriptions of soils) and monitoring well/landfill gas probe installation
• Sampling soil from Geoprobes and soil borings for various environmental contaminants, including VOCs, SVOCs, PCBs, Pesticides, Herbicides, and Metals/Inorganics

Minimum Qualifications

• Associate’s or Bachelor’s Degree in Geology, Environmental Science, Engineering, or related field
• At least 1-2 years professional experience with the above environmental sampling activities strongly preferred, but candidates with a strong educational background and less professional experience will also be considered
• Ability to travel out of town for project assignments at least 25-50% of time (remaining field sampling sites are in Indiana)
• Access to a reliable vehicle, valid Driver’s License, and safe driving record
• Ability to follow detailed Sampling and Analysis Plans
• Strong understanding of and commitment to health and safety protocols
• Willing to work outside, in a variety of climates, and be able to traverse tough terrain at times
• Willing to work at active/closed landfills and industrial properties
• 40-hour OSHA HAZWOPER certification a plus

Position will be compensated on an hourly basis. Candidates willing to work both full time and part time will be considered. Job schedule for most project work will be set well in advance by pre-determined sampling schedules in facility permits. The work schedule will not be evenly distributed throughout the year. Some weeks will likely result in overtime pay, while other weeks may comprise less than 40 hours.

The qualified person would work in a team environment as the supporting field team member, with a more senior Staff Geologist providing support/guidance/mentorship, as needed.
