Description

Performs duties operating a large semi-tractor trailer and other motorized equipment and vehicles used in public works projects.

Examples of Duties

• Employees in this class perform activities of considerable difficulty requiring considerable initiative and independent judgment under general direction.
• Working knowledge of operation of semi-tractor trailer transport and other motorized equipment.
• Working knowledge of traffic laws and regulations applicable to the operation of motorized construction, maintenance, and transport equipment on public streets and highways.
• Working knowledge of safety equipment, standards and regulations.

Qualifications

• Must have a minimum of a High School diploma or GED certificate from an accredited institution.
• One year of experience in the operation of a semi-tractor trailer transport. Possession of a valid Class A Commercial Driver License (CDL).

• Operates large semi-tractor motorized vehicles in constricted loading/unloading locations, on unimproved roads, and on heavily traveled roads and highways; construction and maintenance equipment such as transport/cargo vehicles, tandems, mini wheelers, front driver telesckoops or bantam cranes, street sweeper, slope mowers, lowboy equipment, single chassis, dual drive and dual chassis automotive equipment, and other similar heavy equipment to perform a variety of construction, maintenance and repair work.
• Operates hydraulic, pneumatic and mechanical auxiliary equipment related to assigned tractors and trailers.
• Transports and supervises the loading and unloading of special and heavy equipment and cargo to construction sites.
• May operate construction equipment incidental to loading and unloading trailers.
• May supervise subordinate operators, trade helpers, or laborers or act as a lead driver.
• Check and ensures the equipment is serviced and in good working condition; makes minor repairs and adjustments to equipment, and ensures that periodic maintenance and major repairs are performed.
• Performs daily safety inspections and observes proper safety practices and regulations when operating or working around equipment.
• Assists with mutual work in construction, maintenance, and repair of roads, bridges, parks, drains, sewers and other public works projects; sets flags and barricades; may operate air compressors and hammers, mixers, pumping equipment and saws at construction job sites.
• Performs other related duties as required.
