Summary:
Responsible for the safe, conforming and efficient operation of the wet end. He/She must be able to learn to operate all aspects of the machine
Responsibilities:
  • Work safely at all times, following all accepted company safe work practices.
  • Maintain a clean machine and Work Area.
  • Be able to read the wet end run schedule
  • Have correct paper prepped, hung correctly in the splicer and ready to splice in a timely manner.
  • Perform Starch checks and report findings to the Supervisor and the team
  • Provide relief for breaks
  • Clean Single Facer when not in production
  • Monitor and clean splicers when not in use
  • Hang paper on empty Rollstands in preparation for the next line up on that machine group
  • Assist clamp driver in prepping excessively damaged rolls
  • Take peel carts to shredder
  • Sweep wet end at least once per shift
  • Make sure cores have the paper removed and are disposed of during your shift
  • Empty garbage cans once during your shift
  • Maintain communication with both the SF and DB operators as this is a training position for upward movement within the wet end team
  • There may be a time that you will be ask to perform a task for which you have not been fully trained, if that is the case you are still expected to perform the task to the best of your ability. Agents of the company will not ask you to do anything unsafe, immoral or illegal. If you are unsure the proper way to accomplish what is being ask of you, ask for assistance and training.
Secondary Functions
  • As you train to learn the role of the DB Operator, the following tasks will become your responsibility
  • Know how to get Starch to the DGU, be able to circulate starch if necessary and be able to send starch back to the starch kitchen for cleanup.
  • Read the Wet End run schedule and be able to verify that the next roll spliced, along with the ones laid down, are the correct rolls for the coming paper grades.
  • Make necessary adjustments to Rollstands, Splicers, Bridge Alignment System and DGU to run a high quality combined Board.
  • Splices must be called out to the crew at least 600ft before the splice is made. Once the splice is made the splice is again called out letting the crew know that the “splice is on the way” and with or without a tail where applicable.
  • Check paper alignment after splices and adjust lineup as necessary.
  • Center line paper at DGU.
  • This means the paper should be as close to center of the machine as possible. Assuming that’s the case, any excess paper should be evenly split from side to side.
  • As an example, “If the medium is 1” wider than the bottom liner, there should be ½” of medium hanging off both edges of the bottom liner.”
  • If the medium is wider than the bottom liner, the glue dams must be moved in so that starch will not build up on the Hot Plates
  • Make sure DB belt is clean.
  • Starch buildup on the belts will cause damage belts and also will create dents and caliper variations in the finish product.
  • Prep butt rolls for return to the roll room.
  • Core plugs should be reinserted.
  • Label should be placed on Butt roll
  • Width, Grade and paper wind direction will be hand written under label.
  • When the machine stops because of a Wet End issue, the Wet End Utility should proceed immediately to where the problem is, begin corrections to get the machine running as quickly as safely possible.
Weekly Preventative maintenance
  • Drain all the starch from the DGU and make sure the glue roll is rinsed off thoroughly.
  • If the glue roll is not actively being cleaned off and there is no longer water on the glue roll, it should be turned off.
  • Remove all starch from the Run tank and fill with water. This water can be used to flush the lines between the DGU and the Run Tank.
  • Make sure the glue pans and splash guards are taken apart, cleaned, and if anything isn’t in perfect working condition, inform maintenance.
  • The pan on the backside of the glue pan should be pulled out and cleaned out.
  • Drains/pit cleaned out.
