Job DescriptionThe Team Leader of Engineering Practice leads and manages a multi-disciplined team and plays a pivotal role in shaping and maintaining the standards, practices, and patterns across Wellmark’s engineering organization, while also championing observability best practices to ensure the reliability and performance of its systems. This leader is a strategic thinker with a deep understanding of DevOps principles and a passion for continuous improvement. While this role focuses on leveling up our engineering practice across the organization, we are not necessarily looking for an engineer; we are open to considering someone with a strong technical leadership and delivery background. You will consult with senior leadership to align standards with organizational direction. This role will be at the forefront of strategically driving the evolution of Wellmark’s engineering practices, ensuring they not only meet current needs but also align with the long-term goals of the organization. This role requires a forward-thinking mindset, a keen understanding of industry trends, and the ability to communicate the strategic impact of engineering practices to various stakeholders.
QualificationsPreferred:
  • SAFe Agile Experience
  • Public Cloud associate level certification such as AWS or Azure Solutions Architect
Required:
  • Bachelor’s Degree or direct and applicable work experience.
  • Minimum of 7 years of experience to include any of the combination of the following:
    • Azure DevOps
    • AWS Cloud infrastructure management or development
    • Microsoft Cloud infrastructure management or development
    • NodeJS, .NET, Python, PowerShell
  • Leadership typically gained through a combination of project and informal leadership that demonstrates competencies.
  • Strong understanding of DevOps principles, CI/CD pipelines, and infrastructure as code.
  • Demonstrated ability to be adaptable and adjust effectively to work within new processes, work requirements, etc.
  • Proven experience in implementing change management initiatives.
  • Support innovation and creativity by encouraging your team to accept and resolve challenges.
  • Strong communication skills - written and verbal, to adapting the message to various audiences.
  • Demonstrates a methodical and logical approach to addressing customer needs. While utilizing innovative solutions/designs as appropriate.
  • Self-starter and proactive in approach.
  • Strong collaboration skills with ability to build relationships across technology divisions.
  • Strong decision-making skills with the ability to influence and drive change.
  • Ability to think strategically to communicate and accomplish long-range goals.
  • In-depth knowledge of observability tools and practices, such as monitoring, logging, and distributed tracing.
  • Demonstrated experience in defining and implementing coding standards, design patterns, and development processes.
  • Experience generating analytical data for reporting.
  • Proven ability to adapt when experiencing major changes in work tasks or work environment.
  • Agile process and tools.
  • Continuous improvement and continuous learning mindset.
  • Working knowledge of multiple cloud platforms.
  • Strong interpersonal and communications skills.
Additional Information
  • Provide leadership and day-to-day management of financial and human resources, primarily focusing on employee coaching, development, performance improvement, coordination and budgeting for staff and department(s) specific functions/services. Support business objectives and produce results that are effective, accurate, and timely and on target to meet HR team and stakeholder needs.
  • Develop and execute a vision for the Engineering Practices team that aligns with the organization’s goals.
  • Provide strategic direction and guidance on setting and evolving engineering standards, practices, and patterns, considering industry best practices and emerging trends.
  • Provide strategic direction for collaboration with cross-functional teams to integrate observability into the software development lifecycle (SDLC).
  • Define and reinforce engineering standards and best practices through defined metrics to ensure code quality, scalability, and maintainability.
  • Conduct regular reviews and audits to ensure adherence to established standards
  • Work closely with technology and business leaders, engineers and architects to align engineering practices with strategic goals and business objectives.
  • Create and maintain comprehensive documentation for coding standards, design patterns, and development processes.
  • Drive the strategic implementation and adoption of observability tools and practices within our technical ecosystem.
  • Collaborate with engineering teams to enhance monitoring, logging, and tracing capabilities, emphasizing their role in achieving broader organizational goals.
  • Establish key performance indicators (KPIs) to measure the effectiveness of observability practices and iterate on strategies for improvement.
  • Build and lead a dynamic team of engineers, prioritizing mentorship and skill development to align with strategic objectives.
  • Cultivate a culture of continuous learning and improvement within the team, emphasizing the strategic importance of keeping pace with the rapidly evolving tech landscape.
  • Communicate effectively with technical and non-technical stakeholders, fostering consensus on standards and practices while emphasizing their strategic significance.
  • Drive the strategic vision of automated testing and continuous deployment practices.
  • Drive the strategic vision of reducing coding and production defects by increasing quality and testing.
  • Act as a strategic advisor to leadership, providing insights on how engineering standards and practices can contribute to the achievement of overarching business goals.
  • Will adhere to and are held accountable for the support and influence of Wellmark’s architecture governance standards and technical standards. Provide design specifications to governing boards for proper approvals. Provides guidance regarding IT policies, security and infrastructure.
  • Support methodology standards and tools for Wellmark Technology.
  • Other duties as assigned.
