The Role
The Assistant General Counsel will lead the section of attorneys and paralegals who provide legal consultation and support for the Wells Fargo Banking, Lending & Trust businesses within the Wealth & Investment Management Division, (together, the "Wealth Businesses").
Specifically, this leader will:
  • Lead the section to provide expert, innovative, creative, timely and reliable legal support for bank sponsored products offered to the Wealth Businesses. These products include cash sweeps, bank deposit products, securities backed lending arrangements, and trust products.
  • Work with other leaders and subject matter experts in the Legal Department to advance and coordinate effective legal support for the Wealth Businesses in alignment with Enterprise and Department goals.
  • Serve as a strategic legal advisor to senior business and staff leaders of the Wealth Businesses, providing legal consultation, strategic planning, risk identification, and management advice.
  • Serve as a contributing member of the applicable business and risk management committees.
  • Follow and ensure consistent application of Company and Legal Department policies and procedures, including the management of outside counsel.
  • Participate as a key member of the Wealth and Investment Management Legal Division's leadership team: collaborate with other leaders to provide legal support, as well as help oversee the division's business management effectively, including learning about all WIM legal employees to help support our desired target operation model.
The Candidate
The successful candidate for this role will demonstrate the leadership skill necessary to collaboratively build and lead a high-performing team of legal professionals to drive business results through leadership effectiveness and employee engagement; contributing to broad enterprise strategy with a One Wells Fargo lens; and furthering the company's strong risk management culture by living the Expectations of Wells Fargo. This leader must be capable of initiating action and managing change. The position requires a leader with strong relationship management, influencing, vision, and execution skills. A key differentiator will be the ability to understand and operate successfully in a complex, heavily matrixed corporate environment. The role requires a sense of urgency, passion for excellence and results, and personal accountability for achievement and outcomes.
Required Qualifications:
  • 8 years of Law experience, or equivalent experience demonstrated through one or a combination of the following: work experience, training, military experience, education
  • 4 years of management experience
  • Active State Bar membership or the equivalent in a country outside the United States
Desired Qualifications:
  • Extensive subject matter expertise in the trust, estates, and fiduciary or lending or deposits areas of the law with emphasis on (i) issues involving claims of breach of trust in trust administration and/or investment responsibilities and a working knowledge of various uniform laws that inform trust and estates state legislation; or (ii) issues related to lending to affluent and high net worth individuals and related deposit issues.
  • Significant experience representing large, matrixed organizations providing general legal advice and support in connection with risk and regulatory issues.
  • Strong executive presence and the ability to earn the trust and confidence of senior business leaders.
  • Experience with and having a command of litigation processes, risk, and strategy considerations.
  • Ability to monitor litigation trends, legal developments, and legislative changes impacting personal trust and wealth management banking.
  • Supervise and oversee the handling and monitoring of systemic and non-systemic issues that pose legal, regulatory, and reputational risk to the bank.
  • Identify and escalate risks posed to Wells Fargo, including legal, regulatory, and reputational.
  • Advise on regulatory compliance issues and participate in regulatory inquiries, exams, and audits.
  • Proven ability to communicate and work effectively with federal and state regulators.
  • Experience leading and managing a team of managers, attorneys, and paralegals with staff representation across multiple geographic locations.
  • Creative analytical skills, with the proven ability to effectively and efficiently provide legally correct, practical, and actionable advice and support to fiduciary and investment management businesses, while considering broader legal and business perspectives.
  • Collaborate and partner with colleagues to provide expert, risk-focused, and timely support to clients.
  • Demonstrated ability to build relationships and negotiate for positive business outcomes while effectively managing legal risk.
  • Following, and leading consistent application of and compliance with Legal Department and company policies and procedures, including Wells Fargo's Vision, Values & Goals and policies and procedures with respect to providing legal advice and managing outside counsel and legal expense.
Pay Range
$249,500.00 - $518,300.00
