This part-time faculty position is in the Ethnic Studies department at Cypress College, which is administered through the college's Social Sciences Division. The college is located on the unceded ancestral lands shared by the Gabrielino-Tongva Nation and the Juaneo Band of Mission Indians/Acjachemen Nation, who have been the traditional caretakers since time immemorial. Nearby notable landmarks in Southern California include Disneyland, located approximately 11 miles from campus, as well as many historical sites and museums honoring the innovative arts, languages, and ongoing legacies of local cultures.
Today, the Cypress College Ethnic Studies Department remains committed to providing high-quality education through myriad courses centering comparative and interdisciplinary study of race, ethnicity, and racialization. We teach through analysis of historical and contemporary experiences, community formations, identities, and the movements and struggles of African Americans, Asian Pacific Americans, Chicanas-os-xs/Latinas-os-xs and Native Americans. We work to understand complex intersections of race, class, gender, sexuality, religion and other processes and power relations. Our pedagogies interrogate hegemonic social structures, systems of inequity, and ideologies of difference in relationship to the political, creative, expressive, and cultural practices, struggles and movements of people of color in the United States. Modes of scholarly inquiry embedded within our program promote the development and application of critical erudition and student engagement in social change, justice, and equity.
We strongly encourage those with historically marginalized and/or underrepresented identities to apply. We are eager to learn about who you are and why you want to teach Ethnic Studies at our community college!
