We are looking for an experienced and reliable Construction Safety Manager (CSM)/Site Superintendent (SSI). The successful candidate will act in a dual role with a primary focus on ensuring our construction sites comply with Wendel’s and our clients Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) Requirements and with applicable EHS laws, and a secondary focus with acting as an on-site superintendent on various project types, coordinating all construction activities, contractors and oversite of an entire construction project site.
The CSM/SSI will support our commitment to safety by visiting project sites, assessing working conditions and observing construction activities. The CSM/SSI will proactively help to identify EHS items on project sites. The CSM will work with the project leadership team to ensure all EHS requirements are maintained.
The CSM will also be responsible for maintaining our Wendel safety manuals with up-to-date requirements promoting safe construction sites for our various project types. The CSM will work with our Construction Managers and Project Managers to incorporate EHS requirements into our project manuals and construction documents that our subcontractors and employees will be required to comply with.
As a CSM/SSI, you must have excellent attention to detail to identify EHS issues. You will also be able to discover opportunities for improving conditions and execute various safety programs. The ability to communicate guidelines to a multidisciplinary workforce that includes construction managers, project managers, engineers, architects, and subcontracted trades people is essential.
As a Site Superintendent, you will act as the Wendel Representative to the Owner during construction, manage and oversee and coordinate all contractors and construction activities on the project site.
ResponsibilitiesCSM
  • Develop and maintain Wendel’s EHS plans.
  • Work with our Project Managers and Construction Managers to enforce policies to promote a positive culture of health and safety.
  • Participate in pre-qualifying subcontractors and evaluate subcontractor EHS plans.
  • Visit Wendel’s active construction sites on a scheduled and routine basis. Monitor compliance to policies and laws for both Wendel staff and subcontractors.
  • Evaluate practices, procedures and facilities to EHS requirements.
  • Conduct internal training and presentations for EHS matters. This includes high lighting specific sections of Wendel’s EHS manual or specific sections of our construction documents pertaining to EHS.
  • Inspect equipment and machinery to observe possible unsafe conditions.
  • Investigate accidents, incidents or near-miss events to discover causes and handle all required documentation for Wendel and our clients.
  • Track, follow-up and manage all aspects of potential and active EHS claims.
  • Recommend solutions to issues, provide suggestions for improvement opportunities and/or new prevention measures.
  • Report on EHS awareness, issues and statistics.
  • Manage Wendel’s “Safety Record” requests for project proposals. For example, providing the requestor with our EMR letter.
  • Establish and execute Wendel’s Construction/Site Safety Orientation program (where and when necessary)
  • Filing required reports – mainly OSHA including filing OSHA 300, OSHA 300A reports.
  • Lead the internal Wendel EHS Committee.
SSI
  • Act as the Wendel representative to the Owner during construction.
  • Coordination and oversight of onsite contractors and collaboration with Owner’s representative.
  • Facilitate resolution of on-site coordination issues between the design team, Owner and all on-site contractors.
  • Maintain daily logs.
  • Review installed work.
  • Review contractor pay applications.
  • Work closely with the project PM on all related administrative and managerial tasks.
  • Create and update construction schedule and two-week look ahead schedules.
  • Run Daily Plan of the Day meetings (POD).
  • Coordinate and lead weekly construction coordination meetings.
  • Review RFI’s and Change orders.
Requirements
  • BSc/BA degree is ideal.
  • If no Bachelor’s degree, high school diploma, CHST Certification, OSHA 500 and a minimum of 12 years of continuous, proven construction site superintendent experience leading construction crews and planning work, plus at least 7 years as a dedicated construction safety professional responsible for managing project safety programs, conducting / reviewing hazard analyses and developing controls, conducting safety training and planning work activities or equivalent experience in a relevant field.
  • Deep understanding of OSHA and safety guidelines.
  • OSHA 30-hour certification.
  • OSHA OTI Certification.
  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP) certification preferred.
  • Frequent travel, including overnight stays.
  • Ability in produce reports and develop relevant policies.
  • Ability to work in Microsoft Office and pertinent EHS related software programs.
  • Extensive knowledge of construction site risk assessment.
  • Excellent organizational and motivational skills.
  • Outstanding attention to detail and observation ability.
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal abilities.
  • Current driver’s license.
  • Be willing and able to work outside in all weather conditions.

Salary Range: $85,000 – $125,000.
Wendel is committed to providing fair, competitive, and market-informed compensation. Salary offered will be determined based the successful candidates’ relevant education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities. The salary offered will also take into consideration regional adjustment factors.
