Job DescriptionInvestigative ReporterWESH 2/CW18, the Hearst-owned NBC affiliate in Orlando, is looking for an Investigative Reporter to join our award-winning team of journalists. You believe in the power of uncovering truths, holding public officials accountable, digging into community concerns, telling untold stories, and uncovering exclusive details on the big story. The goal is to change lives and possibly even laws through insightful, accurate, and compelling storytelling. You are a versatile journalist with an existing understanding of public records and FOIA requests. The right candidate can delve into data, while telling emotional stories and delivering creative live shots. You will report to the News Director.
Job Responsibilities:
  • Juggle multiple stories with short and long-term deadlines
  • Take initiative in researching and pitching stories in coordination with the news managers for daily turns, promotables, sweeps, and special projects
  • Work with photographers and producers to produce stories with the highest quality visual journalism
  • Work with managers and station attorneys to ensure coverage is fair, ethical, and legally defensible
  • Must be familiar with media law, ethics, and strict editorial guidelines
  • Embraces the importance of social media in cultivating ideas and engaging with viewers
  • Work with our digital team to ensure investigative content has a strong presence on all platforms through pictures, video, and text updates for all assignments
  • Develop a network of sources who provide tips, early access to information, and allow the reporter to break stories of significance
  • Must be able to cover a wide range of topics including, but not limited to politics, social issues, business, public affairs, and day-of news
  • In person attendance required
Requirements:
  • 3 years investigative reporting experience
  • Demonstrated ability to enterprise and uncover stories while developing contacts
  • Demonstrated record of obtaining and reporting on court documents and other public records
  • Data journalism experience is preferred
  • Maintain the highest standards of journalistic integrity
  • Your demo reel should be indicative of your everyday work
  • Strong writing and storytelling skills
  • Can operate mobile transmission devices and use the latest technology
  • A valid driver’s license and a clear driving record
  • Must work varied shifts, including overnights and weekends
  • Can deal with the stresses and pressures of time-sensitive newscast production
  • Can work in all weather conditions and carry up to 50 pounds
  • Equivalent military training from Defense Information School (DINFOS) and associated experience will be considered
  • Related military training and experience will be considered
