06/17/2022 West Hartford Public Schools is seeking to fill a position for a full-time school counselor for the start of the 2022-23 school year at Conard High School.
Requirement: Current CT Certification (068).
Position Purpose:
School counselors guide students in attaining the best possible educational opportunities in a supportive environment, while promoting an understanding of self and others. School counselors strive to provide students with the necessary skills to become productive and healthy citizens. The School Counseling Program is developmental by design, focusing on needs, interests, and issues related to various stages of student growth in three domains: personal/social, academic, and career/postsecondary planning.
Essential Responsibilities:

• Serves as a member of the school counseling team, and collaborates regularly with School Administration, Pupil Personnel Services, teachers and other staff members to aid in the overall success of students in grades 9-12.
• Case manager of 504 plans on caseload (includes documentation and chairing 504 meetings).
• Plans and implements the School Counseling Curriculum which includes supporting students with goal setting, career exploration, reflection and post-secondary planning- including individual, classroom, and group formats.
• Supports students’ academic performance and progress toward graduation by reviewing progress reports and report cards and planning interventions when appropriate and collaborating with multiple stakeholders to promote success.
• Collaborates with the school counseling department and administration to plan family events related to school counseling (such as transition related events and post-secondary planning events).
• Uses data to document the success of strategies and interventions that are implemented to improve student performance.
• Identifies at-risk students and collaborates with teachers and other professional staff to create appropriate interventions and recommendations.
• Reviews and implements modifications, accommodations, and intervention plans for all students both general and special education.
• Support students throughout the post-secondary planning process including classroom lessons, helping students navigate elements of the college application process including the Common Application, Naviance, FAFSA (and other financial aid documents), and supporting students who have other post-secondary plans that may include tech/trade school, military careers, joining the workforce, etc.
• Maintaining student schedules, ensuring students are on track for graduation.
• Other duties as determined by the School Counseling Department Supervisor and Administration.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

• Demonstrate knowledge of state and federal laws pertaining to school counseling.
• Adheres to preferred practices prescribed by state and national school counselor associations.
• Ability to form positive and supportive relationships with a range of student personalities and multicultural backgrounds.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
• Ability to utilize learning management systems (Power-School, Naviance, Frontline etc.) to manage student information.
