Job Description:

  • Works with students who have diverse learning needs and behavioral challenges primarily at the elementary school level, but occasionally in other district schools

Responsibilities:

  • Carry a caseload of students who qualify for special education services and/or tier three interventions or who are in the referral process
  • Develop and implement plans for students focusing on behavior management strategies and interventions
  • Provide direct instruction and support to students in a one-on-one or small group setting, tailored to their unique learning styles and needs (direct instruction may include both behavioral and academic interventions)
  • Provide training and problem solving to district staff on behavioral strategies for students
  • Collaborating with a multidisciplinary team, including other teachers, support staff, parents, and outside paraprofessionals, to support student success and programs
  • Monitoring and documenting student behavior and progress, adjusting interventions and strategies as needed to promote positive outcomes
  • Developing a positive and inclusive classroom environment that promotes a sense of belonging, respect, and safety for all students
  • Provide behavioral support and guidance to students, helping them develop social skills, self-regulation techniques, and coping strategies
  • Communicate regularly with parents and caregivers to provide updates on student progress, share strategies for supporting learning at home, and collaborate on goal setting
  • Participate in professional development opportunities to stay current on best practices in special education, behavior management, and related fields
  • Administer frequent assessments to evaluate students’ continuous progress
  • Analyze data/evaluate student work and assessment data to make instructional adjustments (error pattern analysis), evaluate social growth, keep appropriate records, and prepare progress reports
  • Performs other related tasks as assigned by the Principal, Director of Special Education, or designee

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Strong understanding of behavior management techniques and strategies
  • Experience working with students with diverse learning needs and behavioral challenges
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills
  • Patience, empathy, and a genuine passion for working with students with behavioral needs
  • Knowledge of special education principles, theories, testing, methods, etc., as well as proven methods of maximizing the educational experience of students
  • An understanding of behavioral characteristics associated with behavior disorders, autism, intellectual disabilities, traumatic brain injuries, and other behavior issues
  • Knowledge of differentiated instruction based upon student learning styles
  • Knowledge of data information systems, data analysis, and the formulation of action plans
  • Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws regarding education and students
  • Ability to use computer network systems and software applications as needed
  • Ability to organize and coordinate work
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others contacted in the course of work
  • Must have a solid foundational knowledge of student behavioral supports or interventions
  • Has strong written and oral communication skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Ability to handle emotionally charged situations
  • Ability to train other people to apply behavior management techniques effectively
  • Ability to occasionally list up to 75 pounds, stand for extended periods of time, work in outdoor environments, bend at the waist, kneel or crouch, and reach horizontally and above shoulders in order to safely and correctly assist with student de-escalation and restraint methods
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Special Education or a related field (Master’s Degree preferred)
  • Valid Indiana Special Education (Mild Intervention) Teaching License/Certification

Pay: From $51,750.00 per year
